Tonight the DNC went hard after middle age white guys. Middle age white guys are the only demographic that still strongly favors Trump, and it does so by 2 to 1. Walz's ex-players with their beer guts, ironworks, ex-soldiers, former Trump voters, and of course Walz himself. The clear message is you can be masculine and be a good person. It is cool to be kind. If Harris/Walz can make inroads into this demographic the election could become a blowout, and it would be an excellent thing for society.
Democrats have the most scope for winning new voters by giving white men a social permission structure to be considerate, nurturing, and protective of the vulnerable, just as Trump gives men permission to be their worst selves. Then it is not only white men but men. If men are secure in their masculinity, they do not need to keep proving it with callow displays of bravado and callous defensiveness.
There is a cultural element, but it can change with leadership. Here in Japan there is hardly any of that toxic hypermasculinity, and our half-Japanese sons are no exception.
I am voting from abroad for all Democrats, who have the moral values to bring out not the worst but the best in Americans.
