WhatsApp video call from ‘friend’ turns out to be deep fake, man duped of money

A 72-year-old man was duped of Rs 40,000 in a deep fake scam in Kerala’s Kozhikode on Sunday, July 9. The Cyber Crime Police, Kozhikode City, told TNM that a First Information Report has been registered as per a complaint filed by PS Radhakrishnan, a Kozhikode native who retired from Coal India Limited (CIL) 12 years ago. A case has been filed under section 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code and sections 66 C and D (identity theft and cheating by impersonation) of the Information Technology Act.

This is a pretty fascinating (but also frightening) scenario that’s becoming reality as AI progresses. It’s common enough for seniors to fall for scams that even the most modestly savvy could suss out, but this is a whole new level of convincing scams that will require the utmost suspicion.

I can’t help but wonder if these are really “deep fakes” as in trained models replicating that specific face and mapping it on other video, or just one of these shitty filters, that makes the eyes and head move slightly like in thw balenciaga memes.

Poor sod is 72, I wouldn’t blame him if that was enough in connection with a little bit of social engineering
