Hi, while I appreciate trying to contribute stories to Beehaw, I don’t think this qualifies as World News.

I don’t follow French politics too closely, but from everything I’ve seen, this guy is absolutely DESPISED by the people. Is he not worried about getting voted out or something? Why does he seem to want to stick his finger in the eyes of the French citizens?

MerrickGreen ,
@MerrickGreen@beehaw.org avatar

He’s term-limited anyway. Just hope he doesn’t pave the way for Le Pen or some other out and out fascist to take over for him.

Kajo ,

According to the French Constitution, the President cannot serve more than 2 consecutive terms. Macron was elected in 2017 and relected in 2022 (against the far-right candidate) so he can’t be candidate in 2027.

Before 2027, there won’t be any meaningful national election in France (European congress in 2024 and municipal elections in 2026).

Also, Macron hasn’t the absolute majority at the French national assembly, but there are tools in the Constitution which allow the government to pass laws without a vote. And the opposition is not strong enough to dismiss the government.

phillaholic ,

tools in the Constitution which allow the government to pass laws without a vote

That sounded terrible until I realized that’s what the Supreme Court can and just did do in the US with their completely made up Major Questions Doctrine.

Seathru ,

From what little I know of french history, I would be worried about far more than just getting voted out.

He’s playing the same game US democrats are, where it’s either him or a fascist.

Le Pen, yes.

Nah. We just have the “choice” between different flavors of fascist in the U.S. There’s no (mainstream) non-fascist choice.

The French always hate their presidents and most French presidents have had abysmal approval ratings. It’s a national sport, maybe for a reason.

Syldon , in French senators want a wider TikTok ban

Ban it on government devices if there is a perceived security issue. Otherwise, governments should not get to decide who has the best content. By all means educate people on the pitfalls of a platform, but allowing politics to choose our media is a slippery slope.

LoamImprovement ,

I still can’t believe he thought it was a good idea to hold a poll asking users if he should be involved with the platform. Imagine spending $44 billion to be told to fuck off.

Fauxreigner ,

He has a lot of narcissistic traits. I’m sure he was expecting a deluge of “of course we love you, you’re a genius and real life Tony Stark, please make our bird app better!” That kind of genuine adoration is one of the few things he can’t just buy outright, and he used to get it, but that well has been drying up as other car companies catch up to Tesla on EVs and their own products stagnate or get worse. Meanwhile, SpaceX’s last big public event was a rocket blowing up, which they could try to spin, but it also destroyed their launch pad because they ignored lessons that NASA learned in the 60’s. I’m sure in his mind all the bad press as people have started to realize what a shithead he is was just haters who were jealous of him, so surely if he just gives his fans an opportunity to express their opinions he’ll get lots of positive responses, right?

Velociraptor ,

I will forever think it’s pretty fucking funny that the only thing Musk had to do to retain his popularity was absolutely fucking nothing. Doing nothing is too hard for this silver spoon coward.

Thrashy ,
@Thrashy@beehaw.org avatar

SpaceX’s Starship launch was much-memed-upon but it honestly went as well or better than could be expected given the development approach the company takes. That said, it’s clear that the test cadence is being rushed at Elon’s behest (launching without a proper pad deluge system, for instance) and they’ve reached a size of rocket that having something go wrong in flight could cause serious damage, and isn’t just an opportunity to deploy funny acronyms and giggle.

That said, SpaceX is one of the few things he’s doing that isn’t a total clusterfuck, and that’s got a lot to do with the much more competent people he has running the company under his nominal leadership. Gwynne Shotwell has been very well-regarded and tends to do a good job of insulating the rest of the company from Elmo’s dumbest whims.

Fauxreigner ,

Oh, unquestionably. The parts of SpaceX that they insulate from him are going well, but there’s no excuse for not having a pad deluge system (or something else that you’ve tested to accomplish the same goal) and it’s gotten them a lot of bad press. The rocket exploding was at least arguably expected, but the fact that they weren’t able to stop the torrent of bad press is notable.

Abubakr , in Violence against women: Sex without consent is rape, say MEPs

This is an issue especially for some married couples. Unfortunately some think because they’re married there is no need for consent now, that’s not the case. More people need to realize this.

CrimsonOnoscopy ,
@CrimsonOnoscopy@beehaw.org avatar

Unfortunately, it even used to be law and not just culture, that consent was not required within marriages.

It’s been a long and uphill struggle but this seems like an important step.

I do find it frustrating that in these discussions, the assumption is often implicit that women are raped, and men are perpetrators. Which is extremely false and carries harms to men and boys who are victimized, or anyone including girls and women who are victimized by women. The MEP’s could stand to use more broad wording here I think.

psudo ,

I agree that the wording isn’t the best, as it does perpetuate the stereotypes you outlined, but at the same time the fact that it’s so heavily reliant on consent will give male victims a better shot at actually being treated fairly as now they won’t necessarily have to prove unwanted penetration happened.

CrimsonOnoscopy ,
@CrimsonOnoscopy@beehaw.org avatar

For sure, improvements to law are likely to also benefit male-assigned victims. It’s mostly the wording I have a problem with- Believing that they can do better.

ArcticCircleSystem ,

My question is why is this only being spelled out now? Hell, where and why did the contrary idea come from in the first place??? ~Strawberry

CrimsonOnoscopy ,
@CrimsonOnoscopy@beehaw.org avatar

I don’t think I understand what you mean. Are you asking about the origin of patriarchy and rape culture?

ArcticCircleSystem ,

I guess so. But mainly why that’s only being spelled out in law now rather than earlier. ~Strawberry

Kempeth ,

A mix between people actually wanting spousal rape to remain legal, people not giving a fuck about feeemale issues, people getting scared that “they can’t even talk to women soon without getting arrested” and probably a few other reasons that range from dumb to malicious.

CrimsonOnoscopy OP ,

To my eyes, Macron clearly has some egotistical and authoritarian impulses.

He clearly seems to believe that he knows better than other people, and has little patience for what they want or say.

ArcticCircleSystem ,

Why though? And why do so many people, including many who aren’t in power, seem to have similarly awful responses to crises? ~Strawberry

Nice to group the US, working with police in foreign countries to help protect endangered animals and helping US citizens, with China, working inside foreign countries to make sure Chinese citizens aren’t disloyal to China. Feel free to bitch about US shitty behavior in foreign countries, lord knows they have left a trail of blood behind themselves, but this particular article isn’t it and the parallels aren’t there.

NuPNuA , in Macron's call to 'cut off' social media during riots sparks backlash in France

Obviously France never had any riots or revolutions before MySpace so this will solve things.

MaybeItsTheLead , in Macron's call to 'cut off' social media during riots sparks backlash in France

I am glad that there is so much opposition to this within the French government. Because:

  1. The French people have the means and the motivation to continue protesting, and this is going to piss them off.
  2. The authoritarian country I was born in regularly does this during protests but they also have almost full control of the media and telecomms . People, also, have limited choices of social media (because almost everyone uses a cell phone because the power regularly goes out, and some social media apps use a lot of data). A lot of times people don’t know that they’ve been cut off until it’s already cut.

I’m not saying he is authoritarian but the idea is authoritarian. Macron is clearly panicked, but this is the wildest, and most extreme reaction. Plus, once people get to know of this then they will just create groups on other platforms. This idea is very short sighted.
