Just before the previous owners of my house decided to put the house on the market they painted all wood inside (stairs, doors, door frames, window frames, skirting) pitch black.

Yes thanks, I enjoy living in a cave. Removing, sanding and painting all that will take me 100s of hours.

Oh, and it was done with the cheapest paint possible while painting over all hinges, locks and sometimes windows.

Aah yes, the landlord special.

jg1i , in Owners destroyed the soul of their own house

I personally don’t like it, but I respect their right to do whatever the fuck they want with their property. If they want a fugly house, then that’s their right.

Korne127 ,
@Korne127@lemmy.world avatar

Honestly, no. At least where I live, they’re finally starting to do something against gravel gardens. They are illegal here (have been for decades but no-one did anything against it) and they’re absolutely terrible for the environment and destroying green space (additionally to them being very bad for bees and further sealing the floor which is awful when any flood happens). Luckily people shouldn’t be able to do absolutely everything they want if it hurts everyone so much.

How do you feel about HOAs?

Korne127 ,
@Korne127@lemmy.world avatar

I’m not living in the US. As far as I know, it’s something very ridiculous that every house needs to look absolutely the same (I feel the freedom). And no, what I wrote isn’t “the same”, mandating how every garden needs to look exactly the same is something entirely different to fighting against very specific “garden” styles that combat the environment and are bad for the infrastructure (see floods). I’m fine with people having their garden however they want and doing stuff, but it needs to be in certain boundaries, e.g. that you aren’t allowed to seal all ground which is terrible for bees, the environment in its wholeness and dangerous during floods.

If there are some rare edge cases where many things depend on it and there are very good reasons to set a certain boundary but otherwise leave the freedom to do the own garden and house how they want, that’s something different to just mandating that there is no possibility to choose anything about it’s looks and destroy all creativity and uniqueness.

average650 ,
@average650@lemmy.world avatar

Got it. HOAs get bad press for requiring every house to look the same, but the basic function they serve also includes preventing stuff like the above. How far they go depends on the HOA, but one that just prevents egregious stuff like the above isn’t fundamentally different from one that requires near uniformity.

I just ask because lots of people hate HOAs, but this is one big reason they exist.

Faceman2K23 , in Getting banned after calling out a power hungry mod.
@Faceman2K23@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I understand why they don’t want links to GFR, they are a a clickbaity source with little real content, but banning you for questioning it is a bit far, a simple explanation would suffice (“hey, sorry you’re upset, here’s why it was removed, have a nice day” with a polite explanation of their stance of GFR and others like them) and we would all just say “oh ok, fair enough”, you would edit your post to say it was all good just a misunderstanding and we would all move on.

I know that on /r/startrek that source was in the automods blacklist so I can understand removing it, but the ban was way out of line when a conversation was possible and very, very easily resolved.

I also got a PM from that particular mod which rubs me the wrong way. if they want to explain their stance, they need to do it in a post to the whole community so we can talk about it, this place is supposed to offer a new start for a startrek community forum and that should start with a conversation between the users and the mods on how we all want it to work, not bans and pms to anyone who questions them.

klieg2323 OP ,
@klieg2323@lemmy.piperservers.net avatar

I can understand that too knowing the context. I personallay still think that article did was thought provoking enough to Garner discussion in the comments, which is half the point of a site like this.

But i agree, it’s why I made the post! This is something to be discussed as a community as we all escape reddit. This is the time to be ironing these things out. We need these discussions and rules to prevent a mod from feeling they need to ban someone for “drama”. Have clear defined rules agreed soon by the community and that problem is solved. Banning people trying to talk about getting a more clear ruleset in place is just asinine. Soon it’s only going to be that mod posting and nobody commenting.

I also get things may have been one way on Reddit, but that also doesn’t mean it automatically applies here. Even if it did it’s not hard to copy and paste rules from reddit to here.

Also, did I see in the modlog they ( @ValueSubtracted is lurking and should really learn this site is way more transparent than reddit) banned you too?

EDIT: Just checked the modlog. They banned you for making this post I’m replying to on a different instance. How anyone could not see that as a red flag of petty retributive mod abuse then I don’t know what is. For what it’s worth, I banned them from my (much smaller but hopefully gonna pic up some Trekkies soon) instance so they’ll never know what’s being missed 😜 of course I’d happily reverse it if they cool off and explain their actions.

If you’ve been playing CSL for any length of time, you know that every major patch is followed by at least a week of waiting for mod compatibility updates, and, sometimes, older mods are just broken.

Patch day is often also “start a new city” day.

Steam is the bane of existence for anyone that mods games. I literally pirated Skyrim after owning it for a decade because it auto updated and made all 280 mods of mine obsolete.

The entirely of modern America could be summarized with “Mildly Infiruating”, tbh.

It is utterly baffling to me how the US has not figured out nationalized healthcare. Literally every other developped nation in the western hemisphere has at this point.

A politician could come out and say “my number one priority is to ensure that every American has access to healthcare, paid for by the state”, and would instantly be villified by like half the country, and that’s insane.

Bluetooth for audio might be the worst implementation of a specification every devised. Ridiculous lag, no multipoint connection, no ability to manage or negotiate connections from the device, limited ability to define the connection (audio vs headset among the culprits). BT for audio just seems like a cruel joke.

Are you sure this isn’t just a CVS thing? It says the same thing for me and I know my insurance covers UTIs for everyone. Maybe try an urgent care?

DRx ,
@DRx@lemmy.world avatar

This is correct… there is 2 things to remember here

  1. CVS only has nurse practitioners, nurses, or pharmacists that are doing the screening, and must refer for certain cases
  2. There are 2 types of UTIs….
  • complicated and uncomplicated
  • Men ALWAYS have a complicated uti due to the anatomy of where the uti is located
  • women can have either, these NPs are only allowed to treat UNCOMPLICATED UTIS and must refer all complicated cases to a physician.

FYI it has nothing to do with insurance

Marruk , in Bluetooth autoconnecting to car when earbuds are already connected

I’ve got a slightly different version of this problem. I work from home, and if my wife drives my car out of or into the driveway while I’m on a call, even if I’m in my office in the basement, my phone will disconnect my earbuds and route my audio to my car.

There is a documented thing insurance companies have started doing where they deny claims until you appeal them. AI was being used somehow to determine which cases.

Shouldn’t drive with earbuds in. Might not hear the horn of the oncoming train. Those things are really quiet. /sarcasm

QuinceDaPence ,

Trains are really unpredictable. Even in the middle of a forest two rails can appear out of nowhere, and a 1.5-mile fully loaded coal drag, heading east out of the low-sulfur mines of the PRB, will be right on your ass the next moment.

I was doing laundry in my basement, and I tripped over a metal bar that wasn't there the moment before. I looked down: "Rail? WTF?" and then I saw concrete sleepers underneath and heard the rumbling.

Deafening railroad horn. I dumped my wife's pants, unfolded, and dove behind the water heater. It was a double-stacked Z train, headed east towards the fast single track of the BNSF Emporia Sub (Flint Hills). Majestic as hell: 75 mph, 6 units, distributed power: 4 ES44DC's pulling, and 2 Dash-9's pushing, all in run 8. Whole house smelled like diesel for a couple of hours!

Fact is, there is no way to discern which path a train will take, so you really have to be watchful. If only there were some way of knowing the routes trains travel; maybe some sort of marks on the ground, like twin iron bars running along the paths trains take. You could look for trains when you encounter the iron bars on the ground, and avoid these sorts of collisions. But such a measure would be extremely expensive. And how would one enforce a rule keeping the trains on those paths?

A big hole in homeland security is railway engineer screening and hijacking prevention. There is nothing to stop a rogue engineer, or an ISIS terrorist, from driving a train into the Pentagon, the White House or the Statue of Liberty, and our government has done fuck-all to prevent it.

lemmy , in Because PTSD isn’t a thing ?

As a Veteran who has PTSD and does not do well on 4th of July. I fought for people's freedom. Let them enjoy their fireworks and I'll stay on my farm fat away taking care of my turkeys who also hate fireworks.

Ataraxia ,
@Ataraxia@lemmy.world avatar

Not everyone can do that. A form of entrainment doesn’t override the right for someone now to experience ptsd episodes in their own home.

TskUghPfftUhh ,

There is being considerate of other’s life experiences and then there is being unreasonable. There’s so many things that can trigger PTSD in people, are you suggesting we stop doing anything that may trigger someone’s trauma? Some people get triggers from benign things (my mother used to suffer traumatic flashbacks from certain smells such as wet mud, I get panic attacks if someone comes up behind me and touches me, I’ve met someone who gets triggered by cars backfiring or balloons popping). The point is that fireworks, mud, people touching you, and backfiring cars are a part of normal life. There are a TONNE of possible triggers, we couldn’t possibly avoid every one of them for every sufferer out there. It isn’t up to the rest of the world to change their lives to revolve around us and our issues. It’s our own responsibility to try to cope and deal with our problems as best we can. It sucks. I say this as someone who suffers from severe PTSD/agoraphobia among a number of other mental health issues that I have been working on for many years. It’s really unfair that this has happened to us but it’s also not fair to expect everyone else in the neighbourhood to stop having fun because we are sadly conditioned to have a traumatic response to something.

Draedron ,

Who had their freedom threatened?

TrinityTek , in Because PTSD isn’t a thing ?

Everyone commenting seems to be missing your point. Regardless how people feel about pets and fireworks, people should be aware that the 4th of July revelry can be extremely difficult for some veterans suffering from PTSD. There's one I know personally who was in combat in Iraq and saw really terrible things. You can tell talking to him it deeply effects him to this day. I think of it a lot when I hear illegal fireworks. At least with the official fireworks shows they know when to expect it. The illegal fireworks are just random out of the blue and could easily trigger a PTSD episode. Maybe the guy in the screenshot talking about patriotism should consider that.
