From MT, I think they just didn’t want west dakota and gave some extra pitty mountains, otherwise it would have been at the continental divide or in rectangles.
Imagine montana as a rectangle. It would be west dakota. It’s only defining feature (other than many important native areas) would be an entrance to Yellowstone.
