It’s mostly about mastodon, but spammers also have hit Lemmy communities. This mastodon post contains solutions to mitigate the wave for admins, and also link to the origin of the thread. Turns out they’re japanese kids from discord.

Sometimes I click on instances to check them out, but feddit.de has consistently been returning a 500 error however there are people posting from there. What kind of magic is this? Have the Germans figured out how to have a private instance that's somehow still connected to the fediverse?...

Very nice improvement and I hope more fediverse software starts supporting this. tl;dr popular videos are also uploaded by the viewers, thus lowering the server load, similar to Bittorrent, but all in the browser.
