To soon, makes you nap?

Hey all!

I am a coffee lover first decree! But if i start my day straight out of bed with a nice cup off black cold, I crash in the afternoon! I am so tired and weak, i need a 25 min nap…

For the last 3 weeks i been following some advice I seen on youtube, which explains you to dink your first cup after 90 min after waking up.

This really worked for me! Now i wanna know if you have some similar experience.

I’d recommend giving Sleep by Matthew Walker a read. It dives into many topics including how caffeine negatively affects sleep, which it does regardless if people feel it does or not.

Similarly, as an example, a lot of people think alcohol doesn’t affect their sleep (or makes it better), but research shows even 1 drink hurts the effectiveness of sleep by interrupting the sleep cycles.

I’ll have look into that, tnx

Title gore? Dunno bro, when it comes to you own body it is more trial an error than what a study found. Metabolisms vary wildly from person to person and so do drug Fx in turn. I can drink a full jar of americano and fall asleep on a turbulent plane with a baby crying.

BilboBargains ,

My first drink is a triple espresso taken with 40mg lisdexamfetamine just after waking. One hour later I’m ready to start my day. At least one more double espresso during the morning but nothing after noon or it will disturb my sleep.

I hear that consuming caffeine in the afternoon can have paradoxical effects and and cause sleepiness. It seems like a bad idea to attempt to override the tendency to wind down in the afternoon. Alcohol is also a sleep disrupter and generally toxic.

Stimulants play an important role in creating the 4 hour window of ‘creative’ time in my morning. If I can maintain a regular sleep cycle this mode of working seems to produce the greatest sustainable work effort. There’s some evidence for this approach presented in Oliver Burkeman’s Four Thousand Weeks.

yeah thats maybe a bit much, tripple espresso to start the day…

quicksand ,

Definitely a bit much, considering the massive amount of amphetamine as well. I guarantee this guy would do much better following your advice and waiting until his body is fully awake before consuming stimulants

HidingCat ,

Yea, cortisol builds up when you wake up, so generally hitting stimulants twice doesn't maximise the effectiveness. But usually an hour after waking up works for me.

Profz ,

Anyone else can’t drink coffee after noon, since it’ll ruin your sleep?
Caffeine sure works in mysterious ways affecting everyone differently.

I dont drink coffee after 16:00, and if i really wanna have a cup i drink decaf 🫢

OldWoodFrame ,

Yeah I used to drink a Keurig at lunch but I realized that it made it hard to get to sleep 11 hours later somehow.

Juggs ,

I literally have a coffee with dessert. And Australian coffee, not the watered down shite. Never had a problem sleeping, and thought it was all a bit of a carry on.

Carnelian ,

I drink 4 cups around 8am and then another 4-6 cups at 4pm, sound asleep at ~11pm every night.

Been meaning to cut down simply because it’s more than double the recommended daily caffeine limit lol. But I think when bedtime rolls around the sheer amount of adenosine backed up in my system just totally knocks me out

Hildegarde ,

Coffee is relaxing. Its the perfect drink before a nap.

Linssiili ,

Have you considered whether you could have ADHD? Caffeine tends to have a calming effect on people with ADHD

Randyy OP ,
@Randyy@lemmy.world avatar

i must say it relax me to… does it count with ADD too?

ICanDoHardThings ,

I save my first cup for when I get into the office. It helps me look forward to going to work in the mornings. I start my day with a glad of water which probably helps with staying awake.

@Randyy@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah that’s what i do now, and i gives me focus during the day. So i guess its helping, drinking coffee after an hour or 2 as a first cup.

Love your username. Believe it or not, I have those exact words as a line of text at the bottom of my phone screen. It’s a reminder for me to see all the time, as I usually have a pretty rough time of things (chronic health problems). Having that sentiment in my face all day every day helps a little with my mental and emotional fortitude.

SnowdenHeroOfOurTime ,

Wholesome and beautiful. I hope you catch some breaks with your health problems

walter_wiggles ,

It’s ok to drink two cups of coffee in a day

Randyy OP ,

Wait, let me count… one in the morning, one during coffee break, one in the afternoon, and one before sleep… That’s four…
