I haven’t tried myself, but suspect its more likely to be generally unethical tpwards the civets. From what i heard at least. Think battery hen farming.

But i have done no research beyond general unregulated market assumptions.

Haven’t tried it myself, but I’ve heard it’s not all that.

Since it is very expensive, many farmers have resorted to unethical production methods. It’s nearly impossible for you to know how it was produced, so there’s a pretty good chance the coffee you can get your hands on came from a farm where the civets are not treated anywhere near as well as you would hope.

Disclaimer: I am actually not a coffee person (saw this post on All).

Went to Sumatra a few years ago, and my friend wanted to go to one of the more “ethical” producers of luwak coffee. We did a tour of the place, they seem to treat their civets fine (at least from what we saw). Tasted the coffee at the end of the tour, and for me it was so different than other coffee that I’ve tasted before. Like it somehow managed to simultaneously taste richer, but also milder in a way that makes someone who usually doesn’t enjoy coffee (me) to actually like it. IDK how to explain it lol.

All in all, it was probably the best cup of coffee that I’ve enjoyed the most in my life. But again, I am not a coffee person–I probably only drink coffee like 3-4 times a year–so maybe I don’t know what I’m talking about, haha.

I’ve tried it, it’s completely overhyped. It’s definitely smoother and less bitter than normal coffee but not worth the higher price and given that it’s impossible to guarantee that you get it ethically sourced, I would recommend against it.
