A spit hood is like a silk stalking over the head to prevent the person from spitting on you. The question is, can they still breathe once it’s saturated.

From the article, here is a study

Article goes on to note about that study, “But critics say none of those studies mimicked the chaos and stress of being arrested or held in jail.”

It also points out “The Marshall Project and 10 Tampa Bay found at least five cases where coroners mentioned spit hoods as a possible cause or contributing factor in fatalities.”

Maybe don’t spit then‽

Edit: I have misunderstood the use of these things, I made an assumption they were to prevent purposely spitting on people.

If the person is still spitting inside the hood, they probably weren’t in control of it in the first place.

I would venture a guess that the mere fact the cops can’t see their face, to see whether they’re having a seizure or choking or otherwise can’t breathe, is part of why they die.

Even the most heartless cop doesn’t want perps dying in their custody because paperwork.

Editing to add from the article:

“When it became soaked with saliva and blood, they added another one. Minutes later, Peters was motionless in a wheelchair. Jail staff spent nearly three minutes pumping on his chest to revive him before they took the bags off of his head.”

You are right. They want their money, too. And when they kill they get to have the best sex of their life afterwards. Kill Then Fuck is what cops want to do.

Fair enough…I thought they were usually only used when people were purposely spitting on cops/medical staff.

ColeSloth ,

You haven’t misunderstood. Purposefully spitting is usually when they’re used. Doubling up on them when there’s a bunch of blood and one is soaked is not normal use and there’s no defense for police or ems doing that. That was just plain stupid and their should be major repercussions for it. That isn’t their normal use.

also, pepper spray, don’t forget that. i’d wager the artificial saliva they used in the safety studies didn’t have the same viscosity as pepper-spray-mucus-and-tears.
