SulaymanF , to news in Biden's Gaza plan 'not a good deal' but Israel accepts it, Netanyahu aide says

Keep in mind Israel has not formally accepted it yet nor stopped the bombings and raids.

Right now this is all background stuff being reported on. Netanyahu is being pressured in both directions; Ben-Gvir and Smotrich have said they will leave his coalition if he accepts a ceasefire, which means elections and prosecution. Turning down the offer will make Israel look even worse to the international public and cause him deep problems with US.

homura1650 ,

Opposition leader Lapid has indicated that he intends to support Netenyahu if his coalition falls apart due to the deal. Of course, such transactional support offers tend to be fical, and Netanyahu needs perpetual support in order to avoid jail on corruption charges.

Unfourtuantly, such a realignment (or, at least the threat of one) to a more centrist coalition is the only plausible path to a deal.

If I had a nickle for every headline I’ve read that has “trump says”

This mother fucker gets entire news articles every time he talks. The least interesting and most predictable man in the world has the news reporting his every word.

I can’t do another 4 years. I can’t.

Please stop treating politics like a cultural, intellect, personal identity battlefield when engaging in this topic. Your “opponent” will see it that way and have their gaurd up, only listening to what to say to try to disprove it rather than hearing what you say. Your job is to change that, so they actually find themselves having a conversation. Asking questions, giving more level but still emotional arguments (not sensationalized like this(

This shit isn’t helpful, it isn’t convincing anyone of anything. In fact I find it harmful

It sounds like he is just whining but the underlying message is there may be more violence if he is prosecuted. He is setting up a threat of violence. “They are going to do what they did since the beginning” is a threat. What did they do in the beginning??? Hmm oh idk unite the right rally and all that jazz. And bookends with one of the most significant moments in American history where the president encouraged and allowed an insurrection to take place for 6 fucking hours while ignoring pleas from his staff, family, legal counsel, and fellow government officials particularly his closest.

But you have to be able to have enough context and a depressingly low bar of critical thinking skills to read between the lines in the article, especially when the headline primes you for what another nutty thing he says and then the reader just decides if they think it is a bad thing to say or not. Ugh. UGH. Thanks for sticking this out

disguy_ovahea , (edited ) to news in Lengthy immigrant detention can be unconstitutional, US appeals court rules

Migrants are given one year of free housing to decide if they want to naturalize or move to another nation. Current immigration law leaves hosting up to individual cities, without Federal mandates for participation. Sanctuary cities are at capacity, and are using a turnstile system to allow new migrants in as existing migrants leave.

POTUS can control detainment or turn away migrants at the border with the power of Executive Order.

Turning migrants away resulted in increased deaths in Mexico, while detainment is clearly not reasonably hospitable to people in need.

Honest question- besides the obvious solution of congressional immigration reform giving migrants the right to assisted stay in places other than sanctuary cities, what should Biden do? Turn away, detain, or overcrowd sanctuary cities?

bassomitron ,

In my opinion, mass immigration is a symptom. We’re not going to solve the problem by treating the symptoms. The better long-term plan would be to build a coalition among their home and neighboring countries to try and help them figure out how to address the stability issues at home. That’s way easier said than done, and it may not even be possible, but I just don’t see the current situation as being sustainable for decades on end.

That being said, for the interim, we desperately need some major reforms with how we handle asylum seekers and immigrants in general. I don’t have enough expertise on the matter to suggest how to go about that, I just know that the current system isn’t working well at all and is actively killing people.

disguy_ovahea , (edited )

Good point. Mexico has stepped-up in reducing crossings, according to AP, but there could definitely be better partnership from them. Although, keeping migrants from crossing is essentially the same as detainment, but in Mexico.

The president has been weighing additional executive action since the collapse of a bipartisan border bill earlier this year. The number of illegal crossings at the U.S.-Mexico border has declined for months, partly because of a stepped-up effort by Mexico. Still, immigration remains a top concern heading into the U.S. presidential election in November and Republicans are eager to hammer Biden on the issue.

The move would allow Biden, whose administration has taken smaller steps in recent weeks to discourage migration and speed up asylum processing, to say he has done all he can do to control the border numbers without help from Congress.

What’s funny is that we’ve learned a huge amount about Roman culture from the graffiti in Pompeii and Herculaneum.

A lot of it was just filthy stuff- …com.au/…/the-bawdy-graffiti-of-pompeii-and-hercu…

But there was a lot of tamer stuff too- ancientgraffiti.org/Graffiti/

My favorite of all is actually, “it took 640 paces to walk back and forth between here and there ten times” because I imagine it to be some teenager’s punishment.

€40k is too little of a punishment. Let him tag the inside of a prison cell for a year, see if he stills enjoys it after that. And then add the clean up costs on top of that 40k and we are talking.

Badeendje ,
@Badeendje@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, and public lashes!

Seriously, 40k is a fuck ton of money for normal people, it is a life altering amount of extra debt to carry. Don’t go around making light of such a punishment.

I personally think there should be more fitting punishment for these kind of crimes, as for a rich person this is nothing and for normal people it is maybe even too harsh. Regardless it won’t teach them what you want to teach. I’d probably go for a very hefty community service punishment, that can nessecarily be done in your home country (if possible)… but that’s me.

Decq ,

Might be a fuck ton of money. Buts he is 27 years old, so old enough to know ramifications. What he vandalized is priceless so, yes I still think the 40k is too little. If nothing else I hope we won’t ever allow this little shit to ever leave the country again. I’m ashamed to be of the same country as this fuck face.

Badeendje ,
@Badeendje@lemmy.world avatar

I’m not saying he could not have known better. im not saying he should not be punished.
I’m not saying the punishment should be light.

The punishment is not just revenge, or at least should not be. It should be a punishment that teaches you to not do it again and thus avoid recidivism. And it should be equal to all. And possibly compensate for restauration. This punishment isnt any of those. Hence I think it is an unjust punishment.

If some would have to spend let’s say 400 hours of community service… that would be every workday for 10 weeks… but more likely every free Saturday for a year. Hell I even think 1000 hours would be acceptable, especially if every shift would start by making someone state out loud why they have to do this.

I’m for punishments that fit the crime… so make the community service grafitty clean up or cleaning other things.

Blizzard ,

He’s done irreversible damage to a pricless part of history. Paying that amount for damages is one thing, I think jail time should go along with it. The punishment should not only be there to teach him a lesson and help fund restoration of those damages, it should be harsh enough to discourage other people from following hia steps. Jail time + paying for damages seems more fitting.

Badeendje ,
@Badeendje@lemmy.world avatar

I doubt it is irreversible, but I guess we disagree on the use of jail. I personally think jail should be for violent people and people that are harmful to society.

I see you could argue the second, but I find it overkill. I’d much rather see that an offence like this is punished with service to society.

If you really want to deter him and other people from doing it again, chop of his hand and stick it on a pike near the crime…

The whole “punish someone with jail and make it as miserable as possible” is something I associate with 3rd world countries, dictatorships and the US.

I’d much rather people like this are taught a resonating message using the right community service that also saves on taxpayer money and not cost 280 a day (or over 100K for your suggested 1 year revenge scentence).

Honestly a 40k fine for me might as well be life-ending. Possibly self-inflicted, depending on my mental state at the time.

Community service makes much more sense.

I’d make him do like 5 hours of CS for every year since the archeology site was inhabited, and 200 hours for every offence. The older the site, the more you have to work off. The more you deface, the more you work off.

I mean, those are just random numbers I pulled out of my ass but you get the idea.
