We should start calling climate news hot news!

dreikelvin , (edited ) to worldnews in More than 50 pilot whales die after mass stranding on Scottish beach

This is ridiculous and sad. Cheers to the helpers who managed to get a few of them back into the ocean. It breaks my heart to know the majority just stranded and died on the beach.

someguy3 ,

It didn’t say they saved any. It says they tried, failed, and euthanized the rest.

dreikelvin ,

I saw it in the dutch news where it was said they were able to put only a couple back in the ocean.

burningmatches ,

They don’t suffocate. Whales breathe air. The most common cause of death for stranded whales is dehydration as they get too hot out of the water.

dreikelvin ,

Ah right, my bad 🥳 it was late okay?

Catoblepas , to worldnews in More than 50 pilot whales die after mass stranding on Scottish beach

The charity British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) said one female was found with a vaginal prolapse and it suspected that the whole pod was stranded after one whale suffered birthing complications.

“Pilot whales are notorious for their strong social bonds, so often when one whale gets into difficulty and strands, the rest follow,” BDMLR said.

Damn that’s sad.

sadreality ,

At least our modern societies don't suffer from this much solidarity!

What are the tide cycles? Couldn’t they keep them wet for a day until the tide came back in?

XbSuper ,

Some cycles are weeks or months. Not that the tide doesn’t come and go, but they may need a super tide, which as said, may be weeks or months away.

someguy3 ,

Ok it says they found them Sunday morning, and this article came out today, so we can guess they hopefully waited one day to try?

Was there an upside down rainbow?

anlumo , to technology in Norway regulator to fine Meta over privacy breaches

So, if the math I did in my head is right, this is just under $10 Million. I’m pretty sure that this is below the cost for complying, and so just another cost of doing business.

TheOSINTguy , to technology in Norway regulator to fine Meta over privacy breaches

needs to be more, that’s not even a slap on the wrist. At least 17m a day.

What the heck is going on with the whales lately? Is it just climate change confusing them?

But we all gonna continue to live in denial that global warming doesn’t exist or isn’t significant yet. How bad is this going to be in 5-10 years time with the current rate at which humans are polluting the atmosphere lmao.

Xanthobilly ,

Why are you laughing? We are absolutely fucked unless we act.

gussybussy ,

Because what can I do? The world runs on greed and until that changes I can’t see us overcoming this.

In my opinion we are already fucked. Just gotta ride it out till the end now.

PlexSheep ,

With that mindset, yeah.

cryball ,

Because what can I do?

I try to focus on being happy and living my own life. These things are civilization level issues, and last 50 years have shown the civilization’s fundamental incapability to face the issue, let alone attempt to solve it at any meaningful scale.

IMO there is nothing wrong with attempting to minimize one’s own carbon footprint, but the futile attempt to push for more significant changes will just lead to disappointment

Then go ‘act’ instead of complaining about other comments online

There’s significant investment in green alternatives. Particularly in China, but in many other places as well.

“It was hotter last year”

“You watch, we will have a crazy cold winter this year. Global warming my ass!”

At least I’m not my sisters children. Poor bastards can barely talk. They’ve got a shit future ahead of them.

To the celciaphobic, that's about half way to boiling, or 2 Popeye's Kitchen's worth of heat.
