_edge , to piracy in Libation: Download DRM Free copies of those audiobooks you've paid for on Audible.

Just to commenting to keep the knowledge: There are other projects that can de-drm audible. Amazon probably knows this and tolerates it. In fact, a long time ago all downloads on Linux did not have DRM. Those days are gone, but this github.com/mkb79/audible-cli should work.

As soon as you have ‘activation bytes’ many tools can play and convert the downloads.

for Windows another good one is github.com/audiamus/BookLibConnect

ornery_chemist , (edited ) to linux in KDE 6 FOR ARCH LINUX IS HEREEEEEEE

Didn’t realize this was happening and yay -Syu went brrr and it broke my shit. Probably doesn’t help that I’m running nvidia with linux (endeavouros). Wayland doesn’t work at all (black screen on login with only mouse ptr, wrong resolution), while Xorg is now much less smooth e.g. on the switching desktop animations. Moving windows around and in-window graphics are fine. Some graphical config stuff changed too; I’m still taking inventory.

I’m also currently playing with nvidia vs nvidia-dkms with different kernels to see if that solves anything.

EDIT: Looks like that my configuration was failing to set nvidia_drm modeset=1 correctly due to my unfamiliarity with dracut. Manually adding nvidia_drm.modeset=1 to my kernel cmdline makes Wayland work (and quite well at that), though Xorg is still laggy.

LeFantome ,

Sorry to hear that. Also on EOS and it is working great.

Same here on Lenovo Ideapad(I think) and EOS. No problems at all.

kattenluik ,

On rolling release distros you should always read (or at least skim) over what’s being updated and if it may impact you.

ornery_chemist ,

Oh absolutely, I don’t blame KDE or arch repos lol. I did see that it was a KDE update but somehow didn’t clock the version number. I had it in my head that KDE6 was much farther off.

Unrelated, but I would have preferred a stolen, watermarked Getty Images photo rather an an AI-generated one. Fits the pirate vibe better to have blatantly and unabashedly stolen something than to indirectly do so with plausible deniability.

Facebones ,

Seconded

rickyrigatoni ,

a lot of people who don’t understand how AI works think it’s using stolen images so it’s close enough for me

anzo ,

I understand AI well enough. The argument that companies training models on data with copyright were actually doing piracy holds true to me. Being in favor or against, since these are big corps using artists work without paying royalties is an open discussion maybe, but nonetheless… I felt that a clarification was due. Sorry (or not) to open the offtopic hatch…

BenPranklin , (edited ) to linux in KDE 6 FOR ARCH LINUX IS HEREEEEEEE

I had to switch back to an x11 session because a lot of stuff is broken in Wayland for me. I was having a lot of flickering in slack and odd mouse issues in games.

Surprised no one has mentioned OpenAudible. openaudible.org

Moonrise2473 ,

IMHO a paid and closed source program shouldn’t have “open” in their name

xenspidey ,

Sure, but this wasn’t an open source discussion. I really enjoy the software, if there are FOSS alternatives I’d be down to switch for sure.

Reminds me of reading the print version of Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace, where you needed one bookmark for the novel and another for the endnotes, which made up like 20% of the book. Hopefully e-readers make that easier now.

helpImTrappedOnline ,

Depends on the reader I suppose. But in my expirances, its much much worse. You see, in a book you can quickly flip back and forth between pages. Moving bookmarks takes no effort. On a ereader you have to pick your page via a menu, go go your book marks via different menu. Delete bookmark via menu

Menu menu menu click click click its awful.

Got a book with a map at the front? Well you better memorize it because its not worth the effort to flip back and forth when ever some location comes up.

On the phone I think I would use two e-reader apps and just switch them. :-D

thermal pads in general tend to be very bad

FuckyWucky , to linux_gaming in I repasted my Dell XPS 9500, I can't believe it helped this much

be careful, if its paste ive seen it leaking out causing parts of the die to not make proper contact eventually killing the CPU/GPU.

i would suggest getting PTM7950 pads, these don’t pump out.

Grass ,

I put ptm in my steam deck and the numbers are better and the heat coming out of the vent now is kinda scary but that means it’s not on the apu I guess. Next is the extra heat pipes mod and also ptm pad for my ancient laptop. It already had a repaste and the exhaust increase is also pretty impressive with just that.

MonkderZweite ,

Ricecorn-size so it doesn’t spill out.

Lojcs ,

The problem described is not the paste getting outside, it’s not enough staying inside.

Shawdow194 ,
@Shawdow194@kbin.social avatar

I've always used paste- never heard of these. I'll totally check them out! I assume they are fine for any CPU/GPU applications as long as they fit? I always lose my paste tubes so having a sheet of these might be easier to keep track of

Glitch ,

I thought it was just me! I swear I have like 4 tubes but can’t find them when I desire to

electricprism ,

Lifehack: Grab any 1970s 1 cent pure copper penny if you are worried about leakage and have the clearance and use that instead. It’s nonsense but hilarious. Memory is hazy but I’ve seen significant gains from this in the past.

Also it’s 10,000 - 100,000 times cheaper as a bonus.

itsmect ,

Do not use “paste” that already has a low viscosity at room temp, it will get more liquid as it heats up. Good thermal paste doesn’t even cost much, and a syringe last for years of regular service on multiple devices. Repasting is not difficult.

Radicaldog ,

You can download the books you buy with credits, and also anything currently in the Plus catalogue. I’ve found this very helpful as they remove things from the Plus catalog with very short notice periods, so you may not get to finish books you start. (And I remember stuff like how Salman Rushdie books were removed when he was in the news from the assassination attempt. Maybe that was publishers seeing dollar signs not Amazon, idk, but it was gross. Same when Sean Lock died.)
