Fanaticus.social is here already but there’s definitely plenty of fragmentation overall. There’s probably more than I realize because I’m still figuring this place out.
Hard to say how that will work out with streaming nowadays. I grew up as an older millenial with things like MAS*H reruns and other shows that ended before I was born. With only a couple of channels on broadcast TV, I only had so many choices. I imagine availability on popular streaming services will have the potential of similar effects, but somewhat less.
As a Linux user who lost at least 100 hours of his life wasting time trying to install a thousand different repacks, I suggest you to stay as far away as possible from any windows repack such as Dodi or FitGirl, usually they open but half way through the installation for x or y reason the installation stops and gets corrupted, you can try a thousand times with a thousand different commands and variables and nothing changes.
I suggest you to use “pre-installed” formats, Steamrip is my top 1 page to go to when I want a pirate game on Linux using Wine, and this is because the game already comes pre-installed, you just have to unzip the file and you have it ready to play.
Then, other highly recommended sites are Elamigos and GoG-Games, and if you really want to download repacks you have Torrrminator which personally I have never used.
Someone should create a community about Linux piracy like r/linuxcracksupport, I would do it but I don’t know if I have the time and patience to be the mod of a community.
That depends! You can run an instance on an old PC for just yourself and some friends for next to nothing, but a bigger instance with lots of traffic can easily climb to hundreds per month or more. No idea where we'll end up when things slow down, but the subreddits this server represent currently have more users than the entire Lemmy-verse 😅
I’m just trying to get a rough idea of the order of magnitude. Has this instance exceeded “old PC” (For discussion’s sake, an 8 core i7-9700k with 32 gigabytes of RAM) yet?
Your definition of “old pc” is much nicer than mine. No we’re not there yet! But likely within the next few months. Lemmy.world recently made this post which you may find educational.
hello. can confirm. I'm on kbin.social right now and seeing this thread. I'm not sure federating is entirely up just yet but it's working a lot better/faster than it was these past few days. Definitely seeing an influx of beehaw and lemmy world users and posts :)
So I’m looking for a magazine that I know is on kbin, that I want to subscribe from here. I’ve tried typing in the magazine name in the address bar (lemmy.world/c/[email protected]), I’ve tried searching in the “communities” search, and I’m just not finding it and getting errors. Direct linking works, but I then I can only subscribe if I have an account on kbin. Help?
What is a reddit thread if not a root tweet with a bunch of replies (and replies to the replies) formatted in a way that you see the organization of the replies?
I like this idea and the Mastedon app seems much faster to post… that’s really my only wish list item from lemmy right now. I’m figuring that’s a temporary imbalance of increase activity and server bandwidth/speed? I understand we are decentralized but so is Mastodon and at least my instance is very smooth and fast.
I can't speak to Lemmy's implementation (I refuse to go near lemmy on account of the maintainers "politics"), but there's nothing fundamental about threading that should make posting slower.
Loading threads here is... different... work than loading your feed in mastodon, it's possibly slower, but posting is from a theoretical standpoint the same. Probably you're just seeing the effect of your lemmy instance not running on sufficient hardware (very understandable given the explosion in user space size).
In addition to the more important issues that fedi-tips discusses I find their stance on anti-vax and US-election conspiracy theories... unappealing, which you can see being discussed here: https://lemmy.ml/post/143057
And that they haven't been shy about exerting their power for political purposes. The hardcoded slur-filter was explicitly about discouraging "right wingers" (I put that in quotes because I suspect their definition of right wing and mine differ), and they at least use to be open about their intentions to moderate the instances that they run as explicitly "left wing" (though I don't see a reference to that on the current site).
God, I wish there were more “X of the week” type shows. I know breaking bad and a bunch of really great shows came out and made the golden age of serial story heavy TV happen - but man, I’m exhausted having to watch 20 hours of something to get any kind of plot resolution.
I mess the days where you could just watch 40 minutes of a show and have a whole story start to finish. So much less exhausting not having to get super invested. I don’t have the energy for serial TV shows these days!
I blame CSI and Law and Order. I think they oversaturated us with “of the week” procedurals drama so collectively we all jumped ship to these shorter, high concept shows.
I may be one of the last hangers-on for this issue, but: my Android phone has a headphone port! That was non-negotiable for me last time I got a new phone. Earbuds do not stay in my ears, are super uncomfortable, and I don’t want to charge a wireless headset or mess with an adapter all the time. I have cheap wired headphones for going out and about that I don’t lose when they fall out because the wire catches them, and really nice wired headphones at home that are much better quality than wireless ones. My car also has a 3.5 mm hookup that sounds a lot better than Bluetooth audio.
Besides that: Having more customization and control. Firefox + adblockers and other extensions. ReVanced for YouTube. Easier access to the phone’s storage and files. Being able to block ads adds so much quality of life.
I absolutely agree with the 3.5mm headphone port. I use mine all the time as every wireless set of earbuds that I’ve tried has hurt my ears in minutes. I also can’t forget to charge my wired ones. It’s getting harder to find a decent phone that has both a headphone port and a micro SD card slot.
I literally can’t keep the wireless earbuds in! I don’t know if my ears are too small or weirdly shaped on the inside or what. Sometimes I can kind of wedge them in for a minute, but only by having them actively digging into the sides of my ear. That hurts and it still falls out as soon as I move my head.
My current phone doesn’t have a micro SD card slot, but that’s another improvement I would really like to have. I like to keep a lot of pictures and files on my phone and it would be great to be able to upgrade the storage as it fills up.
