Star Wars: Racer - I know every track by heart at this point, have it on my Switch and still play quite a bit. Amazing flow state game.

Rollercoaster Tycoon 2 - absolute classic and the nostalgia I get from playing is unmatched

Age of Empires 2 - the music is just muah

KotoR - Best Star Wars game ever made next to Dark Forces 2 and Jedi Outcast

Sunspot , to technology in what would Reddit need to do to get you to go back

I’ve only been here for a day, but the lack of homophobia and transphobia here compared to Reddit has been a breath of fresh air. I’m not afraid of posting here like I was on Reddit, where I’d actually have to debate with myself for a minute or two before posting. It’s like finally leaving a bad relationship; now I’m starting to see how bad that all was for my mental health.

dessalines ,

Use the report button if you see any of that too, we will not tolerate it here.

Reddit thrives off of letting homophobes and transpbobes ruin everyone’s day, because it drives up their engagement numbers. We aren’t going to allow that here.

I have spent probably hundreds of hours in Skyrim at this point, but I would say the most fun playthrough I did was actually on the Nintendo Switch. I think that I enjoyed it because I didn’t stop every hour to install a bunch more mods, since that wasn’t an option (and I guess having it anywhere was nice too…).

If you want a bit of a smoother experience, I would recommend SkiUI on PC and Alternate Start, but I would also suggest trying it vanilla too as it can be a bit prickly to get SKSE (requirement for SkyUI) set up if you’ve never done it before.

I don’t recommend doing what I did and installing 200 mods, finally getting it all working and then not actually going back to the game. Do we really need 12 million K textures?

sailsperson , to gaming in I've never played Skyrim

Holy shit, I thought I was alone in the big gaming world!

The reason I never played it is because at the time the game was out, my PC couldn’t handle it, so I gave up after my sad attempts to sit through the unplayable frames. And by the time I upgraded, there were simply too many games to steal my attention entirely - that’s how it been ever since.

I want to play it, though. I never considered it boring - I liked it even when I wasn’t that interested in fantasy, and now I’m gravitating even more towards it. Hope to get my hands down to it one day, but with Starfield (hopefully) coming out this year, and with The Outer Worlds to beat before that happens, I think I’m not slaying any dragons any time soon.

Self-hosted is one of the subreddits I visited most often, so very interested in having a lively alternative on lemmy.

dogmuffins ,

Is this the best place for us though? @Zoe8338 is the only mod and they don’t seem to be active.

Swintoodles ,
@Swintoodles@beehaw.org avatar

Only becomes a problem if commenters/posters get out of hand. On a more mild topic like self-hosting it’s probably not a massive issue for the foreseeable future.

dogmuffins ,

Hard disagree.

Getting over-run by blog spam is entirely foreseeable.

With a single dead mod it’s entirely foreseeable that we would have to relocate at some point which could be devastating when trying to preserve whatevers left of the community.

styxbane , to gaming in Comfort games?

I have a few, Skyrim is my biggest one. I basically maladaptive daydream Skyrim. If I’m feeling bad I play through it in my head. Some others are No Mans Sky, Vampire Survivors, and generally pixel games are always really comforting to me. I also like to go back and play dragon fable sometimes when I need some nostalgia.

styxbane , to gaming in I've never played Skyrim

I would not do mods your first play-through. However, what I would recommend, is just doing whatever it is you feel like doing when you play. See a cave you want to walk into? Do it. Did you get assigned a new quest that looks more interesting than the one you’re doing? Hop on it. Don’t let certain storylines drag you down if you don’t enjoy them.

sirfig , to futurama in Which character is your favorite?

It definitely is hard to pick a particular favorite, they all have their moments in the show. If pressed though I would have to give it to Bender, the unpredictability just adds lots of fun to the show.

All of them…even, like, mop bucket…and Cartridge bot… and the turtle!

dogmuffins , to selfhost in Reddit Exodus: Welcoming the Selfhosted Community to Lemmy - Migrating to Freedom!

This is as good a place as any to ask… where should we set up shop? This community’s sole mod @Zoe8338 doesn’t seem to be active.

A number of different self-hosting related communities have popped up in the last few days. I’m concerned that without a single focal point we won’t hit a critical mass.

casey OP ,

I concur and am actively researching this issue as well. I, for example created my own instance but am not entirely sure I should be the one to host yet another Selfhosted community. I am hoping for a dominate 2/3 of them to win out, preferably lemmy.ml as it was the first I discovered. Alas, you asked a very pertinent question that I think you should keep searching to find. I did see the owner on Lemmy.world actually responding to his thread…

We should absolutely instill the desire to keep this community alive though.

dogmuffins ,

Looking at the list of instances there doesn’t seem to be any really perfect options.

Honestly I would be most comfortable with an instance administrated by several people. It just increases the odds that admins will know what they’re doing and not lose interest.

casey OP ,

I wonder if we could petition Lemmy.ml to make the adjustment? I’m not positive how the mod roles function just yet.

NuPNuA , to technology in what would Reddit need to do to get you to go back

Literally wouldn’t go anywhere if the app I like wasn’t having to shut down.

Their official app is horrible to use in comparison. Just joined up here and installed Jerboa and it’s like using the app I’m losing there.

Ill miss RIF, im curious if RIF had a different algorithm or something cause from what im reading there was a lot of awful going on with reddit and I saw nearly none of it.

NuPNuA ,

I mean, I didn’t see as much of the bad “Reddit” culture that people talk about either. But I had curated my feed to the point that I had little default subs left so perhaps I was “avoiding the crowds”, so to speak.

I’d like to see a GitHub clone for the Fediverse that enabled the cross-instance forking of code. The recent goings-on with the FOSS Invidious make me worry about the future of all open-source software that tries to allow us some level of privacy. Putting it on a distributed network would be extremely beneficial to prevent megacorps from bullying such projects out of existence.
