I think even calling it Lemmy is not the right move. Yeah, Lemmy is the server software running on a bunch of instances. But we also have kbin, and new softwares will pop up and fork and come and go over time. Once we can do some kind of account or community level migration, it won’t matter whether you are on Lemmy or kbin or the next great thing. Everything will be federated so it will inter-op beautifully. If an unfriendly instance admin comes along, we can collectively cut and run with minimal interruption.

Thats still a way off from where we are now but the hard step was getting to the Fediverse in the first place. So, welcome to the newcomers among us.

Borgzilla ,
@Borgzilla@lemmy.ca avatar

I still use both. 99% of Usenet is spam, but there still a few active groups (especially under comp.*). The BBS scene on the other hand, is booming. I see new users every week on my favourite board.

argv_minus_one ,

Are they doing BBS-over-SSH these days, or do you need a dial-up modem to participate?

duncesplayed ,

Sadly most people CAN’T connect through dial-up, even if both parties have all the equipment. A lot of telcos have redone their entire network in VoIP stuff (with heavy compression) which makes it hard to keep a connection even at 300.

cvr ,

How does a current day BBS work? Landline phone connections are a thing of the past here.

duncesplayed ,

telnet or ssh (usually telnet)

If you’re connecting from a modern computer, you just get a telnet client that does the appropriate code pages/ANSI/zmodem/etc. If you’re connecting from a real vintage computer, you get a little dongle that pretends to be a modem (and often accepts AT commands, including fake phone numbers), but secretly connects to WiFi and relays through a telnet connection.

Some BBSes do still have landlines, and there’s the occasional ham radio BBS, but 99.999% of it is through IP-based telnet or ssh these days.

I think the concept of the Fediverse is still really alien to people, even the people who are using it. Everyone is still so used to their centralized platforms, so they still think of the Fediverse in terms of platforms rather than as a whole.

You still hear people say “Mastodon” to mean the microblogging corner of the Fediverse even if they’re not actually on Mastodon, and now people say “Lemmy” to mean the link aggregation corner of the Fediverse even if not everyone is actually on Lemmy.

melmi ,

Kbin already exists, and a decent portion of people are switching over. It’s still early days though, so it remains to be seen how it all plays out.

108beads , to disability in Introduction

Hi all! I’m here on behalf of my partner of 26 years, who was dx’d with Alzheimer’s (plus a big serving of depression and anxiety). She’s been a longterm disability rights advocate (seizures, hard enough of hearing that she signs—or used to, has been socially withdrawing, and memory + Alzheimer’s… well, you know). When she got the official dx, I joked to her, “well, you were always proud of being Disabled—now you’ve got the Great Mother of all disabilities.”

araquen , to linux in uhhh... what do I call the "subreddits"?

I’ve seen “communities,” and my personal conceit is that “like” communities (communities with the same, similar, or synergistic subject matter) are “cohorts” so you don’t have to type “multi-communities”

palitu ,

can we call them commies?

aka_oscar ,

oof, id rather call them “comms” or just “cs”(cees)

palitu ,

i come from a country where commie is never used as a slur, but by the number of replies that i have received that are mildly horrified, i guess that i may need to think of a different name!

Fedora on the desktop. I got my start on Red Hat Linux so I’ve stuck with it since.

hate the fact that chrome killed the bottom address bar.

i use vivaldi and it covers all the bases (and a lot more, heck it even has its own Mastodon server)

At this point, I just can’t do without Stacks, Tile view, Sessions and Work Spaces. The build-in Periodic Reload is also great, but by far, the most incredible feature is that you can customize your right-click menues however you like. I also have a lot of Command Chains set up in the Quick Command bar.

The amount of stuff that you can customize in Vivaldi has been without parallel for me.

What service would you recommend?

Eidolon_Alpha ,

iptvwire.com/best-iptv-services/

This site is a decent resource to find and compare providers. I’ve used BunnyStreams and PrivateIPTVAcess with no big complaints, but it’s best to just try out 4-5 over however many months to find one that’s stable in your location. Some offer free trials.

I’d also highly recommend using privacy.com to proxy payments through a customizable digital debit card. I’ve never had an issue with a provider over charging or selling the info I give them, but you never know with ‘illegal’ services like this. It’s just a good safety measure to have imo.

dragonfly4933 , to piracy in What's the replacement for RARBG now?

You can use this: ipfs.io/…/QmbpRxBZ5HDZDVRoeAU8xFYnoP4r5eGCxdkmfFW…

That is a low tech html page that can search the SQLite database someone posted. That page is hosted on IPFS, which you can access through one of the gateways, although I posted a link to the page via one of the gateways.

On that page is a button you can press for more information on how to download it to your local computer to have a speedy local copy.

How I have been using it is: search in the following format: [name] [release year] [quality like 1080p] [encode like x265]

do note that the database is not being updated since RARBG is obviously gone now, but stuff prior and including some of 2023 is all there, most what rarbg released.
