Because it wasn’t actually caused by WhatsApp. It was Android malware that targeted a bunch of apps on your phone including WhatsApp and basically injected ads into them. It was called the “Agent Smith” malware for a while if you remember that.
I’m all for being aware of the historical safety concerns of big tech, but this article suspiciously leaves out information.

Just the requirement of requiring Instagram to sign up for threads and use of their app with so many permissions should be enough of a red flag for those unaware of meta’s history.
Not trying to tell any other instance who they should or shouldn’t federate with, but just saying that they’re way worse than your votes being visible in the API.
