he got off easy. hopefully justice will served when he is in the slammer

tider06 ,

He has the biggest gang in the world to protect him, and they run the joint.

Bigmodirty , to worldnews in Tou Thao: Ex-officer in George Floyd case gets 57 months for role in killing

Not enough. Let’s remember Floyd got a death sentence with no trial or jury but simply because these cops thought of themselves as judge, jury and executioner.

feedum_sneedson ,

What did this guy do? Just not stop the other guy? I’m not American.

Hexadecimalkink ,

He prevented citizens from coming to George Floyds aid. He essentially protected the cops killing Floyd from people trying to save him.

joejoefashosho ,

And one of the onlookers that was trying to intervene was a first responder. She testified in her fire department uniform.

someguy3 ,

4 officers on scene. Iirc 2 normal officers, 2 rookies like first week. He was a normal officer and went on crowd control while the other officer knelt on the guy’s neck. The 2 rookies looked on.

mosiacmango , (edited )

The fully trained, but still new to the force rookies held Floyd down while Chavin executed him. They were not passive bystanders. One of the rookies said they should move him, but did not. That rookie was given some leniency for trying to do the right thing, but still convicted because he didn’t actually do it.

This asshole stopped a crowd that was begging to help save floyds life, including a paramedic/firefighter that told them Floyd was dying. He then told jokes as floyd choked to death, begging for his mother.

It’s all on video, all 9+ minutes. You can watch the whole murder in real time. Go do it if you doubt any of the above.

All 4 officers could have made different and better choices that day, but instead all 4 opted to either murder a man or let a man be murdered. They all got what they deserved.

jackpot ,
@jackpot@lemmy.ml avatar

in fairness, i have sympathy for the rookies. two much more experienced senior officers lead the way and i can easily imagined they doubted themselves in their presense. they just looked on. they should get punished sure but i get it. the other two however, long fucking stay in jail please.

Alwaysfallingupyup ,

he didnt die from being choked He died from Fentanyl. The cop that did the knee DEFINITELY she be locked up ! The other two kicked off the force maybe. But not jail time

jossbo ,
@jossbo@lemmy.ml avatar

Weird that he died from fentanyl at the exact same time was he was being choked to death

Warfarin ,

Well no because an overdose of fentanyl induces that

Guess you never saw the trial or the video of how Saint Fentanyl acted prior to being restrained

Phantom3805 ,

Medical examiner testified saying fentanyl was a contributing factor but not the direct cause of death. George Floyd was murdered and people like you are essentially saying he deserved to die because of his behavior. Cops are not the judge, jury, and executioner, and if they were capable of holding him down and killing him then they were capable of handcuffing and arresting him, but chose not to.

    Good, but it kinda ticks me off the he gets to serve this sentence at the same time he’s seeing a 3-year for the civil rights conviction… like rather than 8 years, it maxes out at 5, and that’s some bullshit.

    All four former police officers involved in the incident were convicted on federal civil rights charges, in addition to state murder charges for Mr Chauvin. Ex-officers Thomas Lane and J Alexander Kueng pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter. Thao, who was sentenced to three and a half years over his civil rights conviction, will serve the 57 months at the same time.

    autotldr Bot , to worldnews in Tou Thao: Ex-officer in George Floyd case gets 57 months for role in killing

    This is the best summary I could come up with:

    A former Minneapolis police officer has been sentenced to 57 months (almost five years) in prison for his role in the death of George Floyd.

    The officer, Tou Thao, was found guilty of aiding and abetting manslaughter by a Minnesota judge in May.

    Ex-officers Thomas Lane and J Alexander Kueng pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter.

    Thao, who was sentenced to three and a half years over his civil rights conviction, will serve the 57 months at the same time.

    The former officer had waived his right to a jury trial in the manslaughter case, opting instead for Judge Peter Cahill to determine the verdict.

    Judge Cahill added that Thao’s actions “were even more unreasonable in light of the fact that he was under a duty to intervene to stop other officers’ excessive use of force and was trained to render medical aid”.

    Or at least turn their attention to the real conspiracies. They’re positive that there’s 5G tracking chips in the COVID Vaccines, but it’s lunacy to think that Trump stole classified documents and tried to overthrow the US Government.

    leftist conspiracy theories: the tonkin gulf incident was a setup, declassified documnets show so

    right wing conspiracy theories: the gay satanist democrats are extracting fictional drug from abducted kids, in basement of this pizzeria, which has no basement. i know this from the most reliable source of all: mystic readings of 4chan

    that’s a part of the problem

    reality is boring. it’s the boring shit that gets things done; while there are some exceptional people you should never meet your heroes. wouldn’t it be cool if instead you knew something that no one else does?

    that “secret knowledge” is a part that allows conspiracy theory believers feel superior to non-believers. this is easier if believer is otherwise unremarkable or even miserable, stuck in some hole with no future, is a loner, can’t move and so on. it also helps if they are gullible and or can’t verify information they receive. if you have an hour to waste, watch this www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44

    I understand why conspirancy theories are popular, it is fun to me to think about them. But I don’t believe and the few interactions I had with conspiracy theorists online make me think they are all hard trolling or insane.

    autotldr Bot , to world in The Irish Light: Woman abused by paper which falsely said vaccine killed her son

    This is the best summary I could come up with:

    A grieving mother and her lawyer have been targeted by an extreme campaign of abuse after suing a conspiracy theory newspaper which falsely claimed her son died from a Covid vaccine.

    The campaign of abuse following her legal case has been “nothing short of shocking” and may explain why other relatives have not taken action, Ms Campbell’s solicitor, Ciaran Mulholland, told BBC Radio 4’s Marianna in Conspiracyland podcast.

    In frequent social media posts over several weeks, the Irish Light and its editor, Gemma O’Doherty, have accused Ms Campbell of “outrageous lies”, being “mentally unstable” and involved in a “massive fraud”.

    He told the BBC the legal proceedings were launched after various attempts to ask Gemma O’Doherty to remove the images of Diego Gilsenan failed and resulted in an escalation in online abuse.

    In July, the High Court in Dublin granted a restraining order that prohibits the Irish Light editor from contacting Ms Campbell and from using or publishing the image of her son for any purpose without his mother’s consent.

    Manchester Arena bomb survivors are suing over claims the attack was faked and parents of Sandy Hook mass shooting victims won a landmark ruling against Infowars host Alex Jones.

    It seems surprising that Russians would want to buy property in the occupation zone, with the war still ongoing. If Ukraine wins, no doubt their property rights will be declared null and they will be sent packing. Why take the risk? My only guess is that they must be so heavily propagandised as to not seriously contemplate the possibility of loss.

    BrikoX OP ,
    @BrikoX@lemmy.zip avatar

    They basically have no clue what’s happening as state media represents it as some sort of utopia with most modern buildings being newly rebuilt.

    SimonHoogwerff ,

    I reckon that after the war most buildings will be newly built.

    fluke ,

    Seems like the only way Russia will actually pay for the damages if they think they’ll be keeping it.

    It would be quite the win if Ukraine manage to take the territory back even partially rebuilt. We know that Ukraine have a policy of avoiding costly difficult offensive operations into obvious hard points and cities (selecting to go around instead). I imagine, all going well, if they were to find themselves in a position to liberate the Azov coast then they would try and set the conditions for a Kherson style Russian ‘nope’ retreat to avoid an encirclement.

    nogooduser ,

    It would also support the Russian propaganda machine when the Ukrainian people repossess their homes and throw the Russians out of homes that they have bought (from people who didn’t own them).

    Don’t undderestimate how fucked the housing market is. :)

    kayjay ,

    They’re told it’s Russian territory. They really don’t know that it’s only a temporary occupation.

    treadful ,
    @treadful@lemmy.zip avatar

    Part propaganda, part opportunist. If you can get property at a fraction of its normal price with the chance that it will be valuable in the future, it might be worth the gamble.

    fluke ,

    Russians are still holidaying in Crimea. The propaganda is seriously strong on those that don’t want to see through it.

    sparky ,
    @sparky@lemmy.federate.cc avatar

    True but that’s been occupied for a lot longer and is also farther away, so it would be easier to feel “secure” there for a propagandised Russian. But places like Mariupol on the other hand, where the war is so close and recent…
