    Can we leave the casual racism behind on Reddit?

    pbanana , to worldnews in India LGBTQ+ couples: 'My parents were ready to kill me for their honour'

    Honour killings should be outlawed. This is the 21st century.

    guckfoogle ,

    Wait is it legal in India?

    It’s not legal. Still happens though.

    Murder is not legal in India, no.

    livus , to world in Niger coup: Ruling party HQ attacked after President Bazoum ousted
    @livus@kbin.social avatar

    The 64-year-old, who was elected as Niger's president two years ago, is a key Western ally in the fight against Islamist militants in West Africa.

    The US and France, the former colonial power, both have military bases in the uranium-rich country - and have condemned the coup.

    Yet another Sahel country caught up in the US/Russia proxy war. Meanwhile it's the Nigerien civillians who will suffer.

    masquenox , to worldnews in Ukraine war: Western tanks get pummelled on front line

    Oops… the fact that the Ukrainians are attacking defenses that have been built in-depth tells me that the Russians had a pretty good idea where the Ukrainians were going to attack - this does not bode well for Ukraine.

    @BrikoX@lemmy.zip avatar

    It’s not so much that they know where attacks will happen, but the whole frontline is heavily fortified with trenches and anti-tank mines.

    India is a quasi-dictatorship that depends on its people to be uneducated and divided. It’s more probable that it’ll suffer continued brain drain, as people are looking for opportunities elsewhere.

    nearhat , to worldnews in Israeli protesters vow no let-up in anti-reform fight

    Funny how it’s only “a sort of racist, extremist dictatorship” now, not 75 years ago when the settler colonialism regime took form.

    I have no pity for the residents who ignored and vilified the indigenous Palestinians for resisting oppression. Israel, as the Jewish supremacist settler colonial regime that it is, is incompatible with democracy from the get go.

    Maybe it’s time to admit Zionism is indeed racism and have a truly secular, one-person, one-vote democracy between Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon.

    30isthenew29 , to worldnews in Kevin Spacey cleared over all sexual assault charges

    But there were some other charges from 1991 or something still right? I would love it if he was not guilty, was always a favorite actor of mine and to see him back on the screen. We’ll see about all that…

    InverseParallax , to news in Paris to bring back swimming in Seine after 100 years

    I mean, really?

    I know it’s gotten better but last time I saw it I wouldn’t touch it with an enemy’s dick.

    AnarchistArtificer ,

    From the article, it seems like the largest problem was dumping of wastewater overflow that was beyond processing plants’ capacities. As part of this push to clean up the Seine (as part of a PR for the upcoming Olympics), they’ve built a large reservoir to temporarily store waste water overflow until things level off and the treatment plants can treat the water normally.

    It sounds like a great step forwards in infrastructural improvements that will make a huge difference to the ongoing cleanliness of the water. I share many of your feelings, having seen the Seine myself a few years ago, but this article genuinely makes me feel hopeful

    InverseParallax ,

    I wish them the best of luck, it was a beautiful river before industrial and other waste destroyed it.
