greedytacothief , to technology in Microsoft completes $69bn takeover of Call of Duty-maker Activision Blizzard

I don’t know, maybe I should be angry or something. But Activision/Blizzard have been pretty shitty for a while now. This will just be more of the same and more of me continueing to not buying their games.

normalexit ,

I grew up on Blizzard and Activision games, but the good feelings and nostalgia wore off when they started treating beloved franchises like DLC piggy banks.

dependencyInjection , to technology in Microsoft completes $69bn takeover of Call of Duty-maker Activision Blizzard

Probably paid for with the money they made not paying $29B in taxes over the last 20 years.

We ain’t even playing the game with the same rules and they don’t even need to pretend anymore.

Gregorech ,

Well hlf of it was used for that the rest came out of the couch cushions at Mr Gates summer retreat.

RubberStuntBaby , to news in Former IRS worker pleads guilty to leaking Trump's tax returns

Going to prison for leaking the tax records that Trump said he absolutely would release if he ran for president?

LemmyIsFantastic ,

As if ANY of that nonsense matters in the least bit to the law.

atzanteol ,

Why the hell would it? There is no legal requirement for a presidential candidate to provide tax returns. And there is a huge difference between voluntarily disclosing your own tax returns and an IRS agent exposing somebody else’s returns.

Moral obligation. Ethical obligation… NO, WERE TALKING ABOUT THE LAW HERE. TAKE THE COUNTRY AND PUT IT IN THE BAG!

Rapidcreek , to news in BBC News - US actress Piper Laurie, star of The Hustler and Carrie, dies at 91

Political fun fact: Piper lost her virginity to future President Ronald Reagan while filming the 1950 movie Louisa. She was 18. He was 39. She played his daughter. Enjoy your nightmares, everybody.

autotldr Bot , to world in UK's nuclear fusion site ends experiments after 40 years

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Barry Green recounts the moment in June 1983 when the JET fusion laboratory in Oxford undertook its first experiment.

The chosen model was tokamak, which uses magnetic fields to confine the plasma - a hot, ionised gas - inside a vessel.

And the hope of producing enough energy to power homes remains a long way off - 59 MJ is only enough to boil about 60 kettles’ worth of water.

Joelle Mailloux is the JET science programme leader overseeing the third round of deuterium-tritium experiments which end on Saturday.

She says the key challenges they are focusing on are making the plasma more stable, spreading the power load and looking at improving materials in the reactor to withstand the conditions.

Paul Methven, STEP programme director at the UK Atomic Energy Agency, told the BBC: "On endeavours like this, you need to be simultaneously really ambitious and also realistic.

Spzi , to world in Why BBC doesn't call Hamas militants 'terrorists' - John Simpson

No-one can possibly defend the murder of civilians, especially children and even babies - nor attacks on innocent, peace-loving people who are attending a music festival.

No-one, except for racists who work for the genocide of that population.

But this doesn’t mean that we should start saying that the organisation whose supporters have carried them out is a terrorist organisation, because that would mean we were abandoning our duty to stay objective.

That makes it sound as if the Hamas was a regular, military organization with legitimate goals, which eventually settles their dispute at the negotiating table. And I think that’s giving a false picture of that organization. But let’s hear what they have to say about themselves:

Quoted from article 7:

“The Day of Judgement will not come about until Moslems fight the Jews (killing the Jews), when the Jew will hide behind stones and trees. The stones and trees will say O Moslems, O Abdulla, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him. Only the Gharkad tree, (evidently a certain kind of tree) would not do that because it is one of the trees of the Jews.” (related by al-Bukhari and Moslem).

Quoted from article 13:

There is no solution for the Palestinian question except through Jihad. Initiatives, proposals and international conferences are all a waste of time and vain endeavors.

These people (Hamas, not Palestinians) see it as their religious duty to kill all Jews.

I think the BBC’s position makes sense in most conflicts, but not in this one. They probably just try to appease both sides, with an explanation that sounds reasonable, if you don’t look too much behind the curtains.

That the BBC would report on this unironically is noteworthy.

We gave Israel a free pass to treat people terribly. They treated our people terribly.

What else do they expect?

autotldr Bot , to technology in FTX thief cashes out millions during Bankman-Fried trial

This is the best summary I could come up with:

FTX was once one of the biggest exchange platforms in the world allowing crypto investors to buy, trade and store digital currencies.

Mr Bankman-Fried is pleading not guilty to misusing customer funds and money laundering while bankruptcy lawyers are trying to locate the missing billions.

No one knows how the thief - or thieves - was able to get digital keys to FTX crypto wallets, but it is thought it was either an insider or a hacker who was able to steal the information.

Without using a mixing service to hide the illicit origins of their Bitcoin, criminals risk being caught or having their funds seized by cryptocurrency exchanges.

The rest of the stolen FTX stash - around $230m - remained untouched until 30 September - the weekend before Mr Bankman-Fried’s trial began.

Panorama explores the breakneck rise and sensational fall of Sam Bankman-Fried, the maths genius who set out to transform the world of crypto but ended up being its biggest loser.
