misk OP , to technology in TikTok’s biggest hits are videos you’ve probably never seen
@misk@sopuli.xyz avatar

I avoid algorithmic feeds on Twitter and Facebook because of that exact reason, it was just pure outrage bait and run of the mill entertainment I had no interest in. I use both with chronological feed because they still have their uses - Twitter for following war in Ukraine and Facebook for some niche groups and local events.

What interested me in TikTok initially was that their algorithm supposedly didn’t suck. It’s pretty subjective but I think it learned my interests very quickly and now keeps me in that warm outrage-free bubble. It’s also pretty obvious that it tries to switch up things every now and then, for example sometimes it shows very obscure videos with barely any views, other times you get pulled into a string of gypsy weddings (and comment section shows you’re as confused as others). Ultimately it’s quite fun and harmless if used in moderation.

TikTok is pretty interesting due to how different it is from other video platforms and there are loads of new forms of interaction that it enabled. Even if you’re not interested in using it I can recommend this video essay by Errant Signal to explain some phenomena that emerge from how TikTok works, like music being core part of their memes and weird niches that their algorithm can move you to.

I’m nearly 40 but gave it a try not be that old geezer complaining how D&D promotes satanism and found it pretty neat after calibration period. That meant dismissing plenty of videos with teens twerking but now it’s just one of the places I visit to watch videos, among YouTube and Nebula.

Yeah, it probably spies on you, and so do other tech giants. If you think that your data is worth more to CCP than your own government I have a bridge to sell you. And if you believe that for-profit company like Meta won’t sell your data to CCP when TikTok can get away with this then how about one more bridge?

No, no. We already have a brain rot due to short and easy forms like newspapers, comic books, pop music and tweets.

I’m just so glad that my generation has it’s own moral panic now. Inb4 comments from people who don’t know TikTok and haven’t bothered to read linked article either.

Agreed that interim solution should be to make all “AI” work public domain since it treats everything it trains on as public domain. I’m for it because it would would immediately stop being profitable for commercial enterprises. Then check who they ripped off and settle any financial claims and damages before moving on to establish license for already created output.

I’ll lift a comment from techdirt:

“Let companies rip off your work, or else only Big Tech will be able to rip off your work”

Maybe we’re so far in capitalist hellholle that we simply consider everything to be for sale. What about GPL work that OpenAI steals? Or personal data? With how secretive they are with data they “scraped” we don’t even know if they have any right at all to repackage and sell it.

I’m on Sopuli and see it. It’s more noticeable if you post because those comments remain in your inbox forever lol. Not sure if it’s an Activity Pub kink or something to be fixed in Lemmy (or both).

@misk@sopuli.xyz avatar

While bankruptcy is plausible, in such event debtors would simply change who’s in charge of the platform, per article. It’s wouldn’t be the end for Twitter for sure.

You seem to change narrative / move goalposts with every response.

Nvidia is okay, nobody expects another 1000% stock price increase. Crypto mania is a faint memory when looking at the profits from ML. They can’t keep up with demand to the point of partially dropping some market segments. Their customers will keep gobbling up hardware for foreseeable future because there are legitimate uses for it and data scientists / engineers will keep processing larger and larger datasets.

If anything, they’re likely scared of competition from big tech players doing custom chips. Amazon, Google, Microsoft all sell cloud computing resources and already do own sillicon design. They’re definitely looking to have piece of that “AI” pie too.

Nvidia puts out sleazy statements like the one I’ve linked to nudge regulators to make that pie even bigger.

Nvidia is top dog in machine learning accelerator / server market which is why they have neglected GPU market. They just want more.

misk OP , to technology in Sam Altman wins power struggle, returns to OpenAI with new board
@misk@sopuli.xyz avatar

While large language models and similar “AI” technologies are very overhyped, they are already plenty usable for things like deepfakes which if left unchecked have significant potential to be weaponised and destabilize societies.

OpenAI is a non-profit that’s behind those machine learning models and practical applications like ChatGPT. In principle it should govern development so that it’s safe and responsible. There are many allegations that Sam Altman became focused on profit betraying non-profit mission.

While OpenAI is not technically controlled by commercial entities (it has 49% stake by Microsoft) it’s entirely dependent on them for funding which likely led to being strong-armed to have Altman regain control.
