I thought those were my monkey skulls! Whew, that’s a relief. I’ll call the guys and let them know we’re still on for Saturday.

I have folks in my extended family with long COVID and it suuuuuuuucks. Hopefully this is a step towards being able to treat it.

Yeah… The moment they do that is the moment I turn off and disconnect every smart speaker I own, take them to the electronics recycling place, and start building out an open-source smart home setup.

I use commercial smart speakers because they’re easy and cheap. The moment they stop being one or the other is the moment they stop being in my home.

If they do, it’s going to be hilarious to watch them come up with excuses for why he looks like he’s made of plastic, why the waveform of his voice looks artificial, why the lighting on his head is wrong, and why no one is allowed to interview him.

I’ll need to try to track this down. Years ago, I saw a documentary following someone who had just defected from the Soviet Union, and got to watch him go into a grocery store for the first time. The astonishment and disbelief was palpable.

I’m still salty about that. Google+ was fantastic on release. Simple, clean, elegant, and fast. Then they steadily, systematically fucked it up. By the time it was cancelled, it had become unusable.

kescusay ,
@kescusay@lemmy.world avatar

Yep. Once they screwed up G+, I committed to never becoming dependent on any Google service beyond Drive and Gmail, and only those two because they’re completely untouchable - Google couldn’t break those without having a mass rebellion on its hands.

kescusay ,
@kescusay@lemmy.world avatar

Which is bizarre. I’ve never heard of a football stadium just instantly shutting everything down after the game. There’s always post-game entertainment, opportunities for the opposing teams to shake hands, sometimes some announcements, that sort of thing.

Utterly ridiculous, power-tripping cops. I hope he takes them to the cleaners.

I tried translating that, but Lemmy formatting has borked it. The first three words are “BE SURE TO” but the rest is not translatable.

Never mind, I got it. And yes, I drink it every day. :)

Oh no! Developers will have to choose between catering to bigots and catering to literally everyone else! What ever will they do?!?

Seriously, I hope bigots continue to just remove themselves from all aspects of society.

Well, he’s got emerald-mine money to throw at problems, and he’s been lucky. Money and luck are a potent combination, and can stand in for actual talent and skill in a lot of cases.

He’s also had a good eye for tech investments in the past, though he seems to have lost that recently. For example, he co-founded OpenAI. (Sold all his stake in it to Microsoft before it hit the big-time, though.)

So… luck, money, and a history of investing in or founding tech companies that become at least moderately successful off the talents of others. Of course that’s going to give him an enormous ego and make him think everything he touches turns to gold.

“I simply fell short of my values”: Lauren Boebert issues apology after being removed from “Beetlejuice” performance (coloradosun.com)

Yep. The people at a show like that are 1) consenting adults, who 2) went to the show on purpose, and 3) didn’t bring their kids.

No one in the audience at a kid-friendly Beetlejuice showing went there to watch Bobo get her tits fondled while she blows vape smoke in people’s faces.

What a revolting idiot.

Indeed it is. And I love stories like this one. Very oniony headline, and a deeply interesting story behind the headline.

Contradicting federal health officials, Florida Gov. DeSantis recommends against new COVID booster (apnews.com)

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and the state’s top health department official are directly contradicting federal health recommendations and warning residents against getting a new COVID-19 booster, saying there’s not enough evidence it provides benefits that outweigh risks....

The calculation is as simple as it is disgusting: If he can inspire enough turnout to more than make up for the deaths he causes, then he comes out ahead.

Didn’t work out so well for Republicans in 2022, though.

The smell and taste thing is so goddamn weird. Most of the people I know personally who’ve caught it lost one, the other, or both. Several of them are only now getting it back.

And people wonder why I still mask up when going to stores and am champing at the bit for the new booster. I don’t want any of that crap.

I have kids. I am fucking livid that the assholes who pretend climate change isn’t happening have decided to sacrifice their kids and mine on the altar of making a quick buck.

You can’t eat money, assholes. And you can’t bring it with you when you die. If the future is nothing but more and more severe weather to the point that civilization collapses under the strain, then I hope you live long enough to see it and are unable to hide from reality anymore.

Could you… I dunno, just talk to other Christians? Tell them they’re being silly on stem cells, women’s health, the age of the Earth, evolution, LGBTQ+ people, and much more?

And could you please, please, please get them to finally actually read those Bibles gathering dust on their bookshelves? Help them discover for themselves that Jesus has a lot to say about hypocrisy and nothing to say about gay people? Maybe they’ll also discover that God doesn’t help those who help themselves, but instead commands his followers to help each other?

I expect it to go considerably higher. This was a very, very bad one, in a place with very old - and not very robust - architecture.

Edit: Extremely sad to have been right. The death toll is well over 2000 now, and I think it will more than double in the coming days.

Perhaps it’s just that my take is… depressing. This is an extraordinary tragedy.

Nebraska governor signs executive order defining men as "bigger, stronger and faster" (boingboing.net)

Nebraska governor Jim Pillen, a Republican not noted as a women’s rights supporter, yesterday issued an executive order “defining” males and females and the attributes thereof. kescusay ,
@kescusay@lemmy.world avatar

It’s well done, but there’s a big flaw. It doesn’t make clear that Google isn’t selling your data. In fact, Google’s entire business model would be obliterated if it actually sold your data.

What they’re selling is use of their ad network, which they can tout as having these huge profiles on everyone to advertise to. So if you’re an advertiser and want to sell bee-keeping equipment, Google can say, “We’ll show your ads to people who’ve expressed interest in keeping bees or related topics.”

If they sold the data itself, no one would need the ad network, and their ads revenue would dry up after the initial data sales.

So it’s in their best interests to keep your data secure. The problem is that it’s also in their best interests to give you minimal control over that data, and - as the comic eloquently makes clear - harvest as much of it as they possibly can.

kescusay ,
@kescusay@lemmy.world avatar

That’s what people don’t understand. Google’s actual customers are advertisers, just like with broadcast television. The deal you make with Google is that they’ll give you all sorts of “free” services and software, and in return, you’ll see ads.

And there’s nothing inherently wrong with that model. You get what you want, Google gets what they want, and advertisers pay for it all in the hopes that you’ll like whatever they’re selling and buy it.

You can always stop using free services and pay for them directly instead, cutting the advertisers out. Or use free services from non-profits and open-source software.

But the problem is that it’s also in Google’s best interests to make that as difficult as possible. To make avoiding their data-consumption damn near impossible. Collecting, comparing, collating, and indexing data is literally what they’re the best in the world at. And they have their methods of getting it everywhere.

A broadcaster can’t stop you from turning off the TV or muting it during ads. If they could, they certainly would. (Thanks, laissez-faire capitalism!) But they’re not serving the ads AND providing the TV itself.

Google is both the broadcaster and the TV manufacturer in this analogy. They’re saying, “Here’s a free TV. Isn’t it nice? And it’ll help us give you extremely targeted and personalized ads. Hope you don’t mind that we’ve made it hard to mute, and the TV never actually turns all the way off. And sure, it’s got a camera and microphone, but what did you expect? It’s free!”

For me, there are a few work-specific tasks that require our Windows-only VPN client in order to perform them. Fortunately, the bulk of my job isn’t like that.

kescusay ,
@kescusay@lemmy.world avatar

These days, they’re working fairly well (at least for me). I play some reasonably graphics-intensive games and they perform well. Not the really high-end stuff, but games like The Entropy Center, for example.

kescusay ,
@kescusay@lemmy.world avatar

Ummm… I’m thinking more like two years for personal, and now for professional. I’m a professional, using Linux as my daily driver.

kescusay ,
@kescusay@lemmy.world avatar

It’s getting pretty easy to ditch Windows these days. Microsoft got too greedy and desperate, and actually using the damn platform they built is getting harder and harder, especially if you don’t want the nagging and annoyances that come from them trying to turn your computer into their subscription revenue stream. My impression is that Valve is aware of the problem, and wants to make sure that their store works regardless of which operating system you prefer.

kescusay ,
@kescusay@lemmy.world avatar

I’m actually using Plasma, and while there are very intermittent issues, it works great for the overwhelming majority of the time. I’m looking forward to 6.0, but the current 5.x iterations are already a huge step up.

Which distro and video card(s) are you using? I’m on arch and my system uses one of those setups where there’s an Intel video chip in charge of the UI which offloads intensive graphics work to an Nvidia card.
