The problem with that approach is that just finding a scapegoat doesn’t solve the issue. The Brits and the EU still have to live with the consequences.

The proper way to address this is to analyze what happened and make sure that it will never happen again. If the result of that analysis is that voters are fucking idiots, we somehow have to alleviate that.

The NHS, wages and civil rights were all on the chopping block of the Tories for decades, and people still voted for them in droves.

anlumo ,

No, the referendum was non-binding, it was passed by executive action.

anlumo ,

Some Chinese manufacturers are already working on undermining this by releasing 12V non-PD devices that use the plug. Those devices are not compatible with regular chargers and if you use their power supply for something else that device will be destroyed (because it’s designed for 5V not 12).

They only scan the videos whether they can put ads on them, and content id so they can get music labels to upload their stuff to the platform. They don’t care about the rest.

anlumo ,

You could also stare at a blank wall instead, which is just as exciting as any of the other video platforms.

anlumo ,

The customers are paying the price, not them.

I’ll never understand why he intentionally let himself be captured by Russia. The outcome was inevitable.

anlumo ,

Basically he gambled that Putin will die before him.

Well, that didn’t work out as planned for him.

anlumo ,

No, this means something else in chip design. For example, an AVR microcontroller can be configured by blowing some fuses. Here is an introduction: www.ladyada.net/learn/avr/fuses.html

anlumo ,

4G Internet implies that there’s a fiber connection to that tower, and that tower can’t be far away. This is more like an intentional decision by the providers.

You have no God-given obligation to live in bumfuck nowhere. Don’t be surprised if you’re inconvenienced by your choice of location.

Saudi Arabia Is Trying to Block a Global Deal to End Fossil Fuels, Negotiators Say (www.nytimes.com)

The Saudi delegation has flatly opposed any language in a deal that would even mention fossil fuels — the oil, gas and coal that, when burned, create emissions that are dangerously heating the planet. Saudi negotiators have also objected to a provision, endorsed by at least 118 countries, aimed at tripling global renewable...

The concept of money is built in a way that once you have a lot of it, it doesn’t go away any more.

anlumo ,

Monarchies are way easier to control than democracies, so this isn’t surprising.

You can see that with Russia, it took them an ungodly amount of money and decades of propaganda to take over the Western democracies.

anlumo ,

Those pledges are empty words anyways.

anlumo ,

In nearly every European election since this year, the local Russia-controlled parties have taken over government (if they weren’t the government already, like in Hungary). This will continue next year, especially in the EU parliament. I wouldn’t hold my breath that any help will come from Europe any time soon.

anlumo ,

They’re still digital (a wire is either 0 or 1), which isn’t more useful for this than a regular CPU.

What they do excel in is doing stuff in parallel, because there is no linear list of instructions, everything can happen at the same time (unless you specifically block something until a certain signal is sent).

anlumo ,

He’d get a medal here. We have offical signs with “pigeons are flying rats” here.

anlumo ,

That’s such a tiny market that it’s completely irrelevant to a company like Microsoft.

anlumo ,

We brought value to the shareholders!

anlumo ,

It’ll settle somewhere around 3° to 5°, because that’s the point where the global economy collapses irrecoverably. There’s no other way that we’re going to get out of this.

anlumo ,

Google did not extend XMPP. They let it sit there for a decade, not changing anything. They still only supported SSL 2.0 when servers started to require TLS 1.2 for S2S connections. They didn’t implement any extensions, some vital to the ecosystem back then.

anlumo ,

No, back in the 90s, ISPs had local clones of the entire Usenet subscribers could access directly.

anlumo ,

As someone who had to pay 13 cents per minute in the 90s, this sadly was not an option.

anlumo ,

I think winning is not the goal of the Western military, the goal is to reduce the amount of military equipment in Russia to a historic low. This can’t be accomplished by winning quickly.

anlumo ,

Well, they will have to work together in the future.

Google Researchers’ Attack Prompts ChatGPT to Reveal Its Training Data (www.404media.co)

ChatGPT is full of sensitive private information and spits out verbatim text from CNN, Goodreads, WordPress blogs, fandom wikis, Terms of Service agreements, Stack Overflow source code, Wikipedia pages, news blogs, random internet comments, and much more.

It’s only under copyright if it’s a significant portion of the work. Single sentences are not enough, unless it’s a short poem.

anlumo ,

Yes, especially since they don’t have to be fitted like clothes or shoes. It’s off-the-shelf anyways.

That’s the one thing where I agree with Musk, they’re not necessary.

anlumo ,

The main problem is that there’s no business case. It does not provide value to the company to delete your data, so why would resources be allocated to it?

The only solution is that the fines are higher than the costs for implementing a deletion process.

I’m sure that the smell doesn’t uphold that declaration.

COP28: UAE planned to use climate talks to make oil deals (www.bbc.com)

The documents - obtained by independent journalists at the Centre for Climate Reporting working alongside the BBC - were prepared by the UAE’s COP28 team for meetings with at least 27 foreign governments ahead of the COP28 summit, which starts on 30 November.

anlumo ,

They’ve already built bunkers for themselves.

anlumo ,

On par with those talks. At least those ones can be productive, unlike all the greenwashing they’re usually doing.

anlumo ,

Most of them are older than 80 anyways.

Six teenagers in court over beheading of French teacher (www.reuters.com)

PARIS, Nov 27 (Reuters) - Six teenagers go on trial behind closed doors on Monday, accused of involvement in the beheading of French history teacher Samuel Paty by a suspected Islamist in 2020 in an attack that struck at the heart of the country’s secular values....

You’re presuming a state of mind, just as the other people you’re arguing against are. We don’t know if they regret it or not and never will.

If Americans wouldn’t be so allergic to public transport, it’d be way easier to move away from the whole concept of personal vehicles (except bikes and scooters of course).

Part of that money was paid by X itself (as debt), devaluing it in that process.

That’s why I always share individual windows, never the whole screen. My desktop is nobody’s business.

Uber slashes fees in Bangladesh as drivers keep taking rides offline (restofworld.org)

Jitu Jisan is a Pathao bike-taxi driver in Dhaka. But, he said, taking bookings through the ride-hailing app is always the last resort for him. Typically, he uses the Pathao app only to find a customer, and once he meets them, he turns off the app, strikes a direct deal, and goes khep....

Startup culture isn’t the most efficient. For example, back when Twitter still existed their iOS team had more than 100 people. I was an iOS developer back then, and I could easily have made a similar product alone (just the client, not the server). I don’t think that Tweetbot had more than one developer, and they produced much higher quality than that Twitter team.

Also remember that (former) Google employees who published a video about their work day, where they spent about 30mins for actual work and the rest was R&R.

anlumo ,

Uh, they’re his subjects, he can do as he pleases. They should be thankful that they were allowed to handle his belongings while they were alive.

anlumo ,

Palestine at least has the excuse that they haven’t voted for a long time, Israel doesn’t.

anlumo ,

The problem is that there’s too much money on the line. If certain performance enhancing drugs (like testosterone) are allowed, every athlete will be required to take them if they want to compete at the highest level. Athletes are known to favor short-term gains over long-term health consequences, and they’re pressured by their environment to do so as well.

anlumo ,

Even on estrogen, the power level is nowhere near equal to born women. I personally think that the only fair solution is to have separate trans divisions, but there’s the question whether there are enough contenders for that. Even women often have problems, I know a kickboxing slender woman who constantly complains about not being able to find competitors and always having to compete at a severe disadvantage.

anlumo ,

Why is it dehumanizing to have a separate division? Is it dehumanizing for women to have a separate division?

You can do sports for fun, but not the one with the money behind it. The one without the money behind it is not the one you can see in broadcasts, it happens elsewhere. Because broadcasts cost money, and so those are interlinked.

So, the whole topic is only about the one with the money behind it, aka the one not done for fun.

anlumo ,

That means the big, televised sports too.

I never said otherwise.

If you want any given game to be fair every single team should have a certain distribution among height/weight classes if not among genders as well.

That works for a team sport, but what about sport for a single person, like kickboxing/grappling/tennis/etc?

anlumo ,

Being 5% faster than the previous generation isn’t a great selling point, so they’re grasping for straws.

The police all over the world shoot people all the time and then bring them to the hospital to get fixed. There’s nothing suspicious about it.
