Independence from monarchy is the reason for the season. Independence means taking responsibility for the system. 'We the People' are part of the system. Our job is to Vote!

Happy Independence Day, U.S.A!

An image of white text on a black background, reading as follows: bonnettsbooks 7/3/24 - Open 7-9p, maybe later. Mask recommended. No open drinks, please. Open tonight, closed tomorrow, back to normal on Friday. Hope to see you soon! 248 years ago, the baby United States told England to bugger off. "We don't like being ruled by a king, Monarchy sucks!" And we set up a Congress intended to represent the voice & will of 'We the People. We would elect people to be our voice in Congress. We would elect our President. Our Congress & our President would work things out as 'We the People' wished. If things weren't working out, there would be a Supreme Court to help make sense of it all.
An image of white text on black, as follows: The system worked pretty well most of that time. It's been adjusted along the way, trying to reduce corruption, trying to make things better for more of 'We the People.' Nothing is perfect. It's designed for change. Our ability to make change is being eroded. 'We the People' are part of the system. Independence means taking on some responsibility. The system only works if all the parts do their job. If we want the system to work we have to do our part. It takes time, a little bit here-a little bit there. For over 200 years it's been our system to maintain and parts are going bad. Vote while you can, before the whole thing breaks down. Happy Independence Day.

It's Dayton Airshow weekend!
I shot this photo during Friday practice. I'm zoomed in all the way, the planes are fast, the air is hazy, the heat distorts the light... A rather challenging photo session.

We've got a lot of aviation and other books in here. If you're in town, stop and check them out!

This old bookrack – frail, but still in use – is in the earliest photos from the shop. 80+ year old retailer bookshelves. I've never really stopped to appreciate them in this aspect. Through the years, we've lost a few to wear and this one's fading. There are 5 more still in use, thankfully in better condition.

Stranger was the 1st sci-fi to make the NYT bestseller list. It begins on dry Mars, ends on green Earth.

Dune won the 1st Nebula award, was nearly set on Mars. It begins on green Caladan & ends on dry Arrakis.

Both won the Hugo, dabble in differing lifestyles, politics, belief systems, the importance of water, & are waiting for you here, now.

Stay hydrated!

[article text carefully edited for length] "10 Cents Worth Of Batman Will Bring You $75 Now" by Tim Bleck, Journal Herald staff Writer. Look. Up in the sky. It's a bird. It's a plane. It's the price of old comic books. For the price of a small set of encyclopedias you can purchase the 26-year-old original version -volume I, number one of the adventures of Batman at Bonnett's book store, 502 East Fifth street. Well, maybe you can. "We don't really want to sell it," said Walter Bonnett, son of proprietor Harold Bonneft. They have a volume I, number one of "The Complete Story of the Daring Exploits of the One and Only Superman," too. That dates to 1939 and sells for $60. The original Walt Disney comic (1940), with Donald Duck on the cover, is available for $30. "We've got quite a few $10 ones. That's about as much as most people will go," said Harold Bonnett. "I've been here over 30 years and built up quite a collection. This comic book collection craze started about 10 years ago, I guess." When his son returned from the service a year ago, he began exploring his father's gold mine and answering the requests, mostly from out of town, from collectors. "Right now the hot thing is Marvel Comics" said Harold. "This is the age of super-heroes I guess. And Marvel has them-the Fantastic Four, Thor and Captain America.

Hey! It's been a minute. Lots of memorializing this weekend. Around here, the memories never seem to cease... here's a bit of our Hall of Fame, a couple of vintage Jet magazines, new stories about Lovecraft's old ones, a bestseller, an old parish cookbook, and an '80s TV tie-in! Don't forget, we've got vintage comics, movies, and a whole lot more!

Even Nostradamus didn't predict I'd spend so much time 2024 with Westerns, Horseback Riding, Harness Racing, & Horse Care. I rode a horse once–part of Summer camp, a Scout badge, or something like that... My jam is sci-fi. Maybe it's time I rewatch that space Western series, Firefly.

Art & Logic are not mutually exclusive, though they do occasionally exist in isolation, to their own detriment. I believe there is artfulness in everything. Logic often finds that even chaos has order if we can look close enough. Perhaps, after all, they're really part of the same thing.
