📚 Finished reading White Noise by Mercedes Mercier.

This book follows Dr. Laura Flemming, a prison psychologist tasked with writing a parole report on an inmate who seems to be a model prisoner, but who she feels is hiding something.

An excellent debut novel. A page-turner that won't disappoint fans of the thriller genre!

I don't read a lot of physical books anymore. Ebooks and audiobooks are just more convenient for me. But sometimes I'll make an exception, and if anyone deserves one, it's Raymond Chandler. Dude could write... truly a master of wordcraft. The Big Sleep has so much in it to savor and enjoy, and I'm loving the "hardboiled detective" vibe. @bookstodon

My is brief/won't spoil, to spread good, great, & spectacular far & wide.

CAMP DAMASCUS is a sweet, earnest hug for queers & "weirdos" AND a scorching rebuke of intolerance/ persecution. This contains genuine horror, but the magic is in how it also remains a joyous celebration of/for Outsiders everywhere. Love is real! So is @chucktingle's talent. (Tor/Nightfire)

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5

Bold, intriguing, and psychologically compelling, "Penance" is a book that will stay with you always once you read it. Perfect for readers who enjoy true crime and unreliable narrators, "Penance" is a book that will leave you speechless.

Thank you NetGalley and Harper for an advanced copy on exchange for an honest review.

📕 Killing the Girl by Elizabeth Hill 📕

This was a very dark psychological thriller & right up my street. Told in two timelines but from the same POV, we learn about Carol Cage & the events in her life which have moulded her into the woman she is now.

Full of secrets & brilliant characters, I don’t know why I didn’t read this earlier. There is an urgency to the writing which meant I was in full ‘just one more chapter’ mode. Highly recommended. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

My review of Traced by Catherine Jinks has just gone up at:

https://www.austcrimefiction.org/review/traced-catherine-jinks

"Beautifully paced, with a central character that leans out from the page, daring you to feel her pain, frustration, panic, fear and resolve, TRACED is a novel that shows the reader what it feels like to be afraid, and what protecting the ones you love the most in the world will drive you to do."

I read Iron Curtain by . A page-turner set in the 1980s. A young privileged 'red princess' from a poor unnamed central European country elopes to London in the name of love. The sense of displacement has echoes of the Patricia Engel book I read just before this. There's also enjoyable farce here even if the clichés about the UK are laid on a little thick at times.

Just read Ghost Country by Chris Petit. Enjoyable in parts. But throws too much in. The Troubles, Brexit, Covid. A spy-thriller mush that is 200 pages too long. Always a tell when clunky devices are used to explain plot points.
