I sat out on our newly-extended veranda last night – chair, table, tablet, bluetooth keyboard – and I couldn’t write a word.
It seems to me that our notions of writing are probably evolving. Writers, once upon a time, took up their pen, then they banged out their text on typewriter followed by computer. Now, while the computer keyboard (with typewriter layout) still holds sway, there are at least three more technologies that do as efficient a job at producing text:
Thumbing a screen-emulated keyboard (with typewriter layout)
OCRed on-screen handwiting with a stylus
Automatically transcribed dictation
And for me, handwriting – the first writing technology I ever came into contact with – is still the way to go. Which is what I am going to do now – on a tablet with a stylus, while sitting in a much more comfortable chair than the one at the table.
