Catherine Fletcher's very readable, The Beauty & the Terror (2020) purports to be an alternative history of the Italian #Renaissance & therein lies the (slight) problem. Its a little less than the sum of its parts, offering some great focussed chapters, but its emphasis on the inter-city political context of conflicts, is not as 'alternative' as one might hope. As a synthetic overview its VG, but not as alternative as one might hope
