'Some historians have questioned whether the Greco-Roman writers were accurate in their claims. J. Rives remarked that it was "ambiguous" whether druids ever performed such sacrifices, for the Romans and Greeks were known to project what they saw as barbarian traits onto foreign peoples including not only druids but Jews and Christians as well, thereby confirming their own "cultural superiority" in their own minds.'
'Nora Chadwick, an expert in medieval Welsh and Irish literature who believed the druids to be great philosophers, has also supported the idea that they had not been involved in human sacrifice, and that such accusations were imperialist Roman propaganda.'
I am so disconnected (deliberately so) from Pollute-a-river-with-green-dye Day that I did not know what Tango Foxtrot you were talking about with Kill the Druids Day, even though it’s the same day.
And that helps me celebrate my disconnect even more.
I am glad when that day falls on the weekend so that I don’t have to hear about it at the workplace where I show up between paycheques.
@YusufToropov@history@histodons there is a theory that the pre-Christian religion predominant in Britain and Ireland may have been Zoroastrian
This would account for the numerous stone circle observatories found through the Celtic world and would support the theory that the Druids knew of cosmology, being able to predict eclipses. This would give them an incredible power over the people.
They were monotheistic so Christianity was not a great leap when it arrived and it was easily incorporated
And here is Part II of that exquisite, painstakingly researched video inquiry into the #history of the #druids. This one examines their massive impact on #Ireland.
164 years ago today, Lincoln gave his "RIGHT MAKES MIGHT" speech at Cooper Union. William Cullen Bryant published the speech on the front page of The Post. While in NYC, Lincoln stayed at The Astor Hotel. Read about Bryant, Cooper, and Astor in #NamingGotham.
Trump's Twitter clone is owned by the Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG). The company's owners, mostly Trump, want to merge it w/Digital World Acquisition Corp. (DWAC).
The latter is a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC). Its prospectus basically said: "Invest in our company and when we get enough money, we will buy or merge with something valuable. Just trust us."
