Buddahriffic , to world in Taiwan Again Reports Chinese Carrier Group in Taiwan Strait as Election Looms

It is an international waterway so they are entitled to traverse it. Just like everyone else is.

naturalgasbad ,

This statement is missing context. Under One China policy (the status quo between the CPC and the KMT up until 2016), the Taiwan Strait was considered territorial waters with the median line used to delineate the divide. In the recent years leading up to 2016, neither party crossed this line.

In 2016, the DPP took power and declared that One China policy no longer holds, thus, that the Taiwan Strait is an international waterway.

Deceptichum ,
@Deceptichum@kbin.social avatar

Further missing context, in 2013 China started pumping sand in to make artificial islands to further exert it's power over nearby waters and ramped up it's naval harassment.

The PLAN frankly was not in any state to harass Taiwan prior to anytime before 2010 at the earliest, so it's not surprising it wasn't used as a coercion tool. Such a friendly peaceful neighbor was in the year leading up to 2016 instead practicing to invade Taiwan's presidential office amongst other sites.

robocall OP , to world in Ukraine Says It Uncovers Mass Fraud in Weapons Procurement
@robocall@lemmy.world avatar

I’m sure this feels like a kick in the balls to Ukrainians and Pro Ukrainian people, but at least they are exposing corruption, which is an important part of building a healthy democracy.

SupraMario ,

The only issue with it, is it gives the side(Republicans) ammo to say “look they’re corrupt and stealing our money”…

I’m glad they’re cracking down on this, at least they are while our pentagon can’t find billions it’s lost over the years.

CyberDine , to world in Ukraine Says It Uncovers Mass Fraud in Weapons Procurement

Ukraine used to be one of the most corrupt countries in the world. It dates back to the dissolution of the Soviet Union in '91. All of those Russian satellite countries, including Russia itself had to deal with organized crime and oligarchs and the turmoil and discord they sowed.

This is not a criticism of Ukraine as much as it is an attempt to show those issues don’t just go away in war time, in fact it can extrapolate and make matters much worse as criminals and oligarchs engage in War Profiteering.

I’m actually quite proud of Ukraine and Zelenskyy for keeping a lid on many of those unsavory elements and leading a very effective war against a foreign invader.

partial_accumen ,

This vigilance against corruption (as part of an effort to project the message outside the country) might end up becoming a lasting benefit long after Russia has been defeated, Ukraine is a member of the EU, and NATO.

$40m sounds like a lot, but out of billions it’s a tiny percentage.

Glad to see them tackling it regardless.

I’m sure the pentagon has more expensive credenzas.

Neato , to news in Federal Appeals Court Denies Trump Presidential Immunity
@Neato@ttrpg.network avatar

It’s a good precedent.

I know if I was a sitting President and the courts told me I could never be held liable for ANY CRIME I committed while in office my hesitation for extreme acts would be at least a little lessened. The courts would essentially be saying the President can do whatever he can manage to accomplish, legal or not. Which is essentially handing dictatorial powers to the President.

Itsamelemmy ,

It would give the president the legal authority to assassinate political rivals including Supreme Court justices. Hopefully even our currently corrupt SC understands that granting absolute power to any one person is a horrible idea.

Neato ,
@Neato@ttrpg.network avatar

Yeah. He doesn’t even need to kill anyone. He could simply have all his political rivals arrested for crimes. He could even just have them be the crimes they have committed that aren’t normally enforced. Like the SCOTUS not declaring their gifts, improper congress procedures (gun procedures), insider trading, etc. Then if they are all in jail awaiting trial, they can’t do their jobs. Repeat until he has a Congress to approve removing them and appointing new justices.

It’s an insane thing to agree with so I’m glad the courts understand that.
