autotldr Bot , to worldnews in North Korea's Kim directs cruise missile test as South Korea, US begin drills

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Kim visited a navy fleet stationed on the east coast to oversee the test aboard a warship, KCNA said, without specifying the date of his trip.

Kim said the ship would maintain “high mobility and mighty striking power and constant preparedness for combat to cope with sudden situations,” KCNA said.

South Korea’s military has said this year’s exercises will be held on the “largest scale ever”, involving tens of thousands of troops from both sides, as well as some member states of the U.N. Command.

President Yoon Suk Yeol said the drills would feature several contingency scenarios, such as cyber, terror and drone attacks, and a disinformation campaign by the North.

Choi Il, a former navy officer who runs a think tank focusing on naval power, said the missiles can fly more than 1,000 km (621 miles) and hit land-based targets, and the new ship appears to be a corvette-class vessel, designed to minimise radar detection.

Aboard the ship, Kim vowed to reinforce the navy with improved combat efficiency and modern means of surface and underwater offensive and defensive capabilities, KCNA said.

Olap , to world in Netherlands, Denmark commit to deliver F16s to Ukraine -Dutch PM Rutte

So my father has been of the opinion that this is it. Russians lose after air support and ukraine gains superiority. I keep telling him WW1 is the blueprint here however.

    Who is right?

    wwaxen ,

Last I was told neither side wants to be too bold with their aircraft because they can’t overcome air defence. Unless Ukraine can overcome combined Russian AA and aircraft and really run amok, it can only be seen as one key piece in a large picture.

    Hubi ,

I’d say these are both pretty extreme perspectives. The F16 is not going to be the wonder weapon that leads to instant victory because Russia still has a lot of anti-air capabilities and the F16 is not a stealth platform. It will however have a role in countering their air raids and long range missiles.

While there are some parallels to the trench warfare of WW1, the constant capture and subsequent loss of ground is not what’s been happening. There is (slow) progress being made at multiple fronts. I’d say a more accurate comparison could be to the allied breakout from Normandy in WW2.

In any case the F16s will be a valuable weapon in Ukraine’s combined arms.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

“I am sure our soldiers will give a response to Russia for this terrorist attack,” President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said in his nightly video address, delivered early on Sunday at the end of a visit to Sweden.

Zelenskiy said the strike on Chernihiv, a city of leafy boulevards and centuries-old churches about 145 km (90 miles) north of Kyiv, coincided with the Orthodox holiday of the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord.

People leaving church and others passing by were among those hurt when the missile hit the theatre, where a meeting was taking place, Chaus said.

Law enforcement agencies were looking into how Russians became aware of the event, which he said included business and community representatives but Ukrainian media reported involved drone manufacturers.

An event organizer said all the participants, including engineers, members of the military and volunteers, were asked to go to an air raid shelter in the theatre when the alarm sounded, but some people went outside.

“All those who took shelter remained safe,” Maria Berlinska, a co-founder of the Dignitas Fund, whose fundraising includes money for drones for the frontline, said in a Facebook post.

Click here to see the summaryLONDON, Aug 17 (Reuters - Hedge fund EDL Capital is betting on further falls for China’s offshore currency and says the yuan’s slide could be the next “black swan event” to rattle world markets, according to an investor presentation this month seen by Reuters. EDL Capital, which manages about $1 billion, said factors weighing on the yuan include geopolitical tensions driving Western countries to re-home supply chains that will starve China of foreign investment. China’s labour market has also grown less competitive versus other Asian countries such as Vietnam and India, while a post-pandemic recovery has sputtered and foreign currency reserves “might be lower than what they are believed to be,” it said. A way to do this would be via derivatives called options aimed at profiting at certain price levels on dollar strength against yuan weakness, said the presentation, without confirming if EDL is using this strategy. The hedge fund, run by star manager Edouard de Langlade, was up about 8% this year, said the presentation. Trades on mining, short positions in U.S. equities and bullish bets on Chinese stocks detracted from fund performance, the presentation showed. — Saved 46% of original text.

Maybe I’m dumb, but if I go buy property in Mexico (for instance) and the government decides to take it, or I stop paying on it, or run out of money, I don’t get any protections for my money. I can’t file for bankruptcy and keep my money safe. I gambled and lost.

Why do non American companies/people have the opportunity to file for bankruptcy as protection in a country they aren’t beholden to the rules of?

autotldr Bot , to worldnews in China Evergrande seeks Chapter 15 protection in Manhattan bankruptcy court

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Evergrande’s filing comes amid growing fears that problems in China’s property sector could spread to other parts of the country’s economy as growth slows.

The health of Country Garden (2007.HK), China’s largest privately run developer, is also worrying investors after the company missed some interest payments this month.

Evergrande has said creditors may be able to vote this month on a restructuring, with possible approval by Hong Kong and British Virgin Islands courts in the first week of September.

Last month, Evergrande posted a combined $81 billion loss for 2021 and 2022, prompting investor worries about the viability of a debt restructuring plan it proposed in March.

On Monday, its electric-vehicle unit China Evergrande New Energy Vehicle Group (0708.HK) announced its own proposed restructuring.

That plan called for a $2.7 billion debt-for-equity swap, and a nearly $500 million share sale that would give Dubai-based automaker NWTN (NWTN.O) a 27.5% stake.
