Maybe the difference is the fact that Dessalines is directly involved in the Lemmy project. Maybe that makes it self promotion in the Apollo dev’s eyes? 🤷
Self-promotion rules are really weird for open-source projects too. Its like we’re telling people about a pizza recipe that we created and are sharing freely… we’re not selling anything or trying to profit off people.
Hosting video content must be insanely expensive so I have some amount of sympathy for YouTube. However, ads earn such a paltry amount that I can hardly fathom how anyone can put up with it.
The total amount of ad revenue between all sites is only like $12 per user per year. So IMO it is a net benefit to block all ads (save your sanity!) and simply pay the creators of content you like.
Even just one $5 Patreon sub is worth more than all ads I’m likely to see so I block everything I can and IMO my conscience is clear
When they announced they would make their codebase proprietary it was definitely a turning point. In hindsight, you can clearly see a shift in their way of doing things from that point on.
Yep, the two I used to replace it are one, fstop which us my go to, you used to be able to get the pro version for free on fdroid, not sure if you still can. Two, simple gallery, that one I think it has a pro but I can’t remember but if it does, you can get it on fdroid.
I like fstop overall more, but simple gallery has most of the same features with imo a slightly worse ui, but it has webp support which is nice.
Yeah I remember the Simple App suite. At first it was just Gallery, then the paid bundle in Google Play, and later other apps followed. I think LeafPic has a super interesting UI, but that one is proprietary.
I’d be interested to look into the Android side again. I’m on iOS for 5 years now, I bet there are some very nice things to discover!
