Is this a cry for help? Do we need to get them some therapy?

Potatos_are_not_friends , to technology in Roku lays off 300 workers and removes streaming content to save money

I have a Roku TV.

I liked it at first because it’s just a vehicle for using Netflix, Hulu, or streaming from a HDMI.

But in the past 6 months, more and more ads keep showing. Things I’m refusing to interact with. Tried blocking and then they circumvented that.

missveeronica ,

Not only that, but now all apps have to have remove any Screensaver that kept the screen active on that app. For instance, Plex now doesn’t have a Screensaver so if you are listening to music and pause it too long, you lose all progress on that Playlist and it starts all over again. Big bummer that is making me question getting a new Roku later this year.

Confused_Emus ,

When it comes to Plex and Roku, I’d like them to work out whatever issue it is that makes it a toss-up whether or not movie subtitles will show up. They work fine on any other device I watch through.

missveeronica ,

I got around that by hardcoding foreign subs into mp4’s.

BonesOfTheMoon , to news in Facebook and Instagram may offer paid, ad-free plans in Europe to sate EU privacy concerns

I can’t think who would pay for Facebook. They should pay people to be on there it’s so bad.

Infinity13 ,

Lots of people i think. Meta has lots of brain dead users

randomname01 ,

A lot of people are totally unwilling to pay for digital services, especially those that were originally free to access. Like yeah, it feels good to to call people on fb idiots I guess, but that’s not really an argument for their willingness to pay for fb.

BonesOfTheMoon ,

I just find most people hate it even if they use it myself.

autotldr Bot , to technology in Microsoft to unbundle Teams in Europe in bid to avoid EU antitrust fine

This is the best summary I could come up with:

The move follows a three-year saga that began when Slack filed an antitrust complaint against its competitor, claiming that including Teams in these bundles was illegal and that Microsoft was blocking some people from getting rid of the program.

The tech giant finally agreed to separate Teams from its productivity suites earlier this year but said it was “unclear” how it would happen.

Then, in July, the European Commission appeared to get tired of waiting and launched a probe into whether bundling Teams into productivity suites was in defiance of EU competition rules.

Starting October 1st, Microsoft 365 and Office 365 should each be available for €2 less per month or €24 across the whole year for customers in the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland.

However, Microsoft claims that any frontline workers or small business owners in the region will still have the option to include Teams in their purchase.

Microsoft also says it will create additional support resources to direct developers to public APIs and address questions from users, such as how their data is being transferred from Teams.

The original article contains 408 words, the summary contains 181 words. Saved 56%. I’m a bot and I’m open source!

Hawk ,

This summary is missing that the bundle with Teams becomes €3 more expensive.

Existing customers keep paying the same price.

silverbax ,

Sure, let Microsoft suck up all the data across your business for free, or don’t pay and keep your data private.

Oh great… I’m sure this will work perfectly with no issues at all. Like for example a word “French” being censored as a bad word in Age of Empires IV where you can play French so if you want to communicate with people you get censored for no reason…

    SomethingBurger ,

Why would the word French be censored? Are Americans so afraid of our superior culture and healthcare that they want to suppress any discussion about it?

rich , to technology in Xbox adopts an eight-strike suspension policy | Players who strike out won't be able to use Xbox's social or multiplayer features for an entire year.

I don’t play online games anymore, but this makes me sadly nostalgic for playing Halo 2 on the Xbox at launch back in my late teens and other games on that console. There was shit talking galore and it was amazing.

Problem is I guess now gaming is open to more people, there’s vastly more chance of those who would take it way too far

I haven’t played online since the 360 days so who knows what the experience is like now. Only have time for single player titles nowadays.

    keeeener ,

it turned from a bunch of 12-18 year olds screaming “I fucked your mom last night” to a bunch of mid-late 20-30s saying “you stupid n*****” every other sentence…

I have turned off game chat in every game since modern warfare 2019

I miss the 360 era myself, but as someone who enjoys playing competitively in every game, it’s hard to play unless you have a bunch of like minded individuals with you… and I even find that challenging some days

    spiritedpause ,

Those 20-30 year olds were probably those same 12-18 year olds lol

Varixable , to technology in AMD unveils its first laptop processor with 3D V-Cache

    Ryzen 9 7945X3D

I don’t know why this name is so funny to me. It just seems so much more ridiculous than an evenly named Ryzen 9 79500X3D. Like what, were getting 45 more units worth of a Ryzen 9 7900X3D, but not quite enough units for a Ryzen 9 7982X3D?

    Contramuffin ,

It’s because the 7900 and 7950 are using an “old” naming scheme and the 7945 is using a new naming scheme.

    • 7 = released in 2023
    • 9 = Ryzen 9
    • 4 = Zen 4
    • 5 = mobile/APU

One of the side effects of this is that bigger number no longer necessarily means better, especially if you’re comparing between architectures

    Varixable ,

Thanks for the explanation! That makes a lot more sense than what I assumed was an arbitrary number assignment.

As is true for every product ASUS sells. They are simply an integration company and don’t produce much themselves.
