As I did last week, I am posting some short videos that explain the terms people are tossing around now. Again, think what you think, but try to educate yourself on the law. The first video explains what genocide is. It is a complicated subject which is hard to boil down into a short video, but the following one is decent. 1/4

Genocides happened before the coining of the phrase see e.g. attempted extermination of Indigenous in the US, the killing and deaths of Africans during Transatlantic slavery, as well as the Armenian situation mentioned. In addition after WW2 genocides continue to happen with frightening regularity. It can only be applied to the 4 groups mentioned : national, ethnical (ethnic), racial, religious. 2/4

Crimes v. Humanity is a serious international crime although as yet there is no treaty or convention on it. But, it is considered part of customary international law. Notice that genocide did not protect against killing political groups. But crimes v. humanity does. Again, a short video for background. 3/4

@blackmastodon If you're in the DMV area this weekend, you can go see a rarely displayed piece of Black sculpture. LAST SUPPER, a rendition of the biblical event done with Black figures by artist Akili Ron Anderson will be on display at the Studio Acting Conservatory, where it was "uncovered" after being lost for a while. The piece will be shown Sunday from 11-4pm. Check website for address: https://studioactingconservatory.org/

@blackmastodon Don't know about you all, but I was needing something to soothe the soul. This is a cut from kora master, Toumani Diabate, called Elyne Road. It's long. Let it wash over you and just run it in the background while you do whatever you do.https://youtu.be/iEZMNyeyjbE?si=MZH2HLBlvv_wuLX4

Wars are started by men and most of the victims of armed aggression are women and children. Women throughout the world are at the forefront of movements for peace. Peace in the Middle East will only happen when there is security, dignity and respect for all peoples who live in the region. @blackmastodon If you can take a slightly longer video at under 6 minutes, here is one on proportionality and how a determination should be made as to civilians losses versus military objective. https://youtu.be/YQZAY2tGGcU?si=iXqr_KB44VecE0k-

Everyone is entitled to their views on what is happening in Palestine/Israel. At a minimum however, you should know and understand what international law requires when there is an armed conflict. Yes... there are RULES for how to fight a war. Many lay people do not know that. In this short thread I'm going to post short animated videos that explain the rules, under International Humanitarian Law. 1/4

Last week saw Fatoumata Diawara in concert. I didn't know her work but she's Malian so I was all in. She sings but also plays electric guitar! She's a great singer though at times the show was a little TOO electric for me. Here's a clip. I'm also going to post her Tiny Desk Concert where she is actually playing the guitar. Enjoy

I went to a freshened. contemporary version of the musical The Wiz last night. It was fabulous - more Stephanie Mills than Diana Ross , if you understand the reference. The new Dorothy, Nichelle Lewis has a powerful voice. Saw it in Baltimore at the start of the tour. They will be in the DMV towards end of Oct and in NY in the spring, where Wayne Brady will take over as the Wiz. Catch it if you can. https://baltimorefishbowl.com/stories/ease-on-down-ease-on-down-the-drome-the-wiz-returns-home-to-baltimore-after-nearly-50-years-at-the-hippodrome/

Hope everyone in NY stays safe. Here's a little music for your Friday. This song is Allah B2y from The Nile Project musicians. I mentioned the project before. It works with musicians from all the countries impacted by the Nile river and water shortage. They tour together to educate people on the issue of water shortage. See second post for more on the project 1/2 https://youtu.be/Slf_oo4s33c?si=KRbRjr2q-V4Vvb1A

Since I'm still here with you all instead of being in Morocco...I thought I would post an example of spiritual music. This is Shakawtu from Musa Dieng Kala. It's an example of Sufi music from Senegal. It is NOT toe tapping music but meant for quiet contemplation and prayer. During the festival Sufis from all over the world sing for free at night in the medina. https://youtu.be/eWgq650ZvT4?si=bv2DqjybMn8hCsXc

Well...after 6 years of planning and saving, my trip to the Fes Festivale Musiques Sacre du Monde in Fes, Morocco was cancelled in sympathy with the earthquake victims. Was supposed to leave today 😧 . I totally get why they cancelled and my heart goes out to the Moroccan people who are suffering. But...I am sad. Hope my health stays strong so I can try again next year.

After a beautiful and uplifting homegoing ceremony, our gentle giant, a warrior in the fight to protect civil and human rights, particularly for the accused, Prof. Charles Ogletree was laid to rest on Saturday. His battle with Alzheimer's is over. He can rest in peace. He will be sorely missed.

@blackmastodon I have a bonus cut this week. A certain bad actor in the country music world caused people to dog country music last week. I get it...but for all you closeted country music fans who might have been silent last week, here’s Miko Marks on her cut ANCESTORS. It’s country y’all. She's Black and she is singing about us. https://youtu.be/8UTXD5ig_Og
