This is part of a triumphal monument by Boccus I, King of Mauritania.

The style leverages Roman symbols but is visually distinct. It is thought to celebrate the victory shared with Sulla in the the Jugurthine War.

On I want to talk about the ancestor of the bra: the strophion!

In the goddess can sometimes be seen putting it on or taking it off but mortal women are depicted wearing it too.

It is uncertain what the Greek strophion looked like but the Roman adaptation, the strophium, was a breast band, a strip of cloth wrapped around the upper torso.

It was a normal but optional piece of feminine clothing.

Roman erotic fresco from Pompeii depicting a couple seemingly about to have intercourse with her riding on top of him. She is wearing a strophium around her breasts and an arm band and anklet while he is fully nude, lying on his back in anticipation.

Here is a photo of a woman replicating the Roman Strophium, inspired by the Greek Apodesme. It was folded from a single piece of fabric, as in the figure of Aphrodite above.
