Just made the switch to Nobara Linux on my desktop and ill probably go with Mint on my ancient laptop tomorrow. My only hang up was games but it seems like compatibility is a lot better nowadays so hopefully I can fully switch over. Same for windows only programs and Wine.

Sami ,
@Sami@lemmy.zip avatar

Im on AMD so can’t help with that

I’ve always found it absurd how you can get compensated with amounts of money you would not see in a lifetime of work if you win the right type of legal case in the US so much so that purposely getting hurt to sue has become a running joke. Nothing against this particular case or individual but it always seemed like a perverse form of justice instead of, for example, making the party in the wrong change their policy to avoid similar incidents happening in the future while also covering legal fees.

Sami ,
@Sami@lemmy.zip avatar

Yeah, I mostly used that example since it was a school district so it would be feasible to enact actual policy change that would punish violations internally. I agree that for private corporations this does not work but for public institutions it’s also not as effective of a deterrent as it could be due to lack of direct financial accountability.

Sami ,
@Sami@lemmy.zip avatar

This is just straight up racist propaganda. No other way to describe it

sabaya is straightforwardly associated with what we moderns call rape

Absolutely factually incorrect. Sabaya is the plural of sabiye which means young woman/girl. The masculine form is sabi which means boy or shab for young man (not exactly symmetric like use of guy vs girl in english). Zero sexual connotation and used in everyday language in levantine arabic.

Sami ,
@Sami@lemmy.zip avatar

Pretty much yes. (Ma)demoiselle vs madame are also used due to french influence over the region for singular use but sabaya is what you would use for a group of younger women with neswein being the alternative for older/married women.

Sami ,
@Sami@lemmy.zip avatar

So both of those words are spelled sabaya when anglicized and while I will admit I was not familiar with the soft s variant because it’s antiquated (and still not necessarily sexual in meaning even if that one is debatable), it doesn’t sound like the man in the video who is supposed to have said that even said either of those words to me. I genuinely can’t even make out what the word he said is.

Why is this the subject of debate nearly 8 months after the fact?

Sami ,
@Sami@lemmy.zip avatar

How do you get the materials in to build a pier? That should answer your questions if they are in good faith.

Sami ,
@Sami@lemmy.zip avatar

I’m talking about the logistics of physically bringing in the building materials

Sami ,
@Sami@lemmy.zip avatar

A crucial part of warfighting? They are building a port purportedly to feed the people that their closest ally is deliberately starving by denying aid that Israelis have engineered to be necessary for their subsistence.

Do you think the ships will not be docking in Israel and that nothing will be transported by land through crossings? The same crossing that Israel uses to move their armed forces, weaponry and supplies through on a daily basis. Somehow those crossings will be completely off limits for the same US military that helps Israel coordinate a lot of their military operations and logistics.

I don’t understand how you can fail to see the absurdity of this situation. It’s been 7 weeks since they announced their plans and so far no construction has begun and a ship has had to return to the US due to a fire. Even if they do get something built, there will still be the need to operate and deliver the aid from the pier to the interior of the enclave with… trucks.

Sami ,
@Sami@lemmy.zip avatar

Sorry, but you’ve fallen for the propaganda if you actually think Israel has to allow the United States to do anything given the power dynamics. The reason this is performative is that everyone acknowledges (including ex Israeli high ranking military leadership) that this war cannot be fought without explicit US support at all times. If not for the offensive weapon supplies then for the defensive iron dome re-supply. They have held and continue to hold complete leverage over Israel and can end this tomorrow if the US administration so chose. You don’t have to have to the same viewpoint as I do but at the very least you have to acknowledge the power dynamics at play.

Sami ,
@Sami@lemmy.zip avatar

The same roads they can use to let in aid trucks without any of these theatrics. Should the UN officials also “approach their news diet more rationally”? Please realize that outside of your western bubble you are completely isolated in your viewpoints on the ongoing ethnic cleansing.

Sami ,
@Sami@lemmy.zip avatar

Yes the US establishment is mostly in favor of Israel’s actions. That is the problem. If you think the US can actually “lose” Israel then I don’t know what to tell you. They have very, very few allies without US backing.

Sami ,
@Sami@lemmy.zip avatar

“make it possible to review our nuclear doctrine and deviate from our previous considerations”

Context being their purported self-limitation on developing nuclear weapons. Not stated directly given context but implied.

Sami ,
@Sami@lemmy.zip avatar

Funny how Israelis don’t get the same terrorist designation. Two are terrorists and the other is “horrible”.

Sami ,
@Sami@lemmy.zip avatar

Both of those groups do represent a sizeable portion of their respective people but both people remain fractured without getting into the distinction between a people and an officially recognized country.

Unless you’re saying that Hamas is the representative of the Gazan people and so that makes all of Gaza responsible for the attack on Israel?

Hamas is the current representation of the Palestinian armed resistance. Palestinian resistance was not always violent and was not always led by religious fundamentalists. Take your above sentence to its logical conclusion, let’s say that they are fully representative then what? Are all the Gazan civilians also terrorist supporters/sympathizers too?

My point is that designating movements that seek to overthrow regimes or fight against occupation purely as terrorists ignores actual motivations of these groups and the people they represent politically (regardless of how much public support they actually have).

You can choose to believe that Palestinians and Yemenis take up arms to spread fear and kill for the sake of their religious beliefs/hatred or because of their inherent nature or some other reasoning, or you can offer the same intellectual charity that you offer Israeli people who support current and previous regimes and acts of unimaginable brutality.

Both those groups hold horribly regressive ideologies but the reason that they exist cannot be reduced to just terrorism no matter how convenient it may be ideologically. Attacks on civilians on Oct 7 are not justified but resistance groups have a right to resist occupation with force under international law. The Houthis are the de facto authority in Yemen and despite not having international recognition are taking actions that could be justified under the obligation of signatories to the genocide convention.

You might disagree with either of these framings and rightly so as matters of international law are complex but you have to at the very least offer the same charitability in trying to analyze the underlying motivations even if the groups representing these actions are reprehensible.

“Unprovoked”. They are literally locked into that plot of land. Some might say there’s a concentration of them there. They are not 2 separate sovereign states at war but an occupied people within one state that is actively hostile towards them. A “government” which does not control the border, air or port is symbolic at best. 200+ civilians were killed in the west bank in 2023 prior to october 7th but that’s not violent terrorism in your eyes is it?

Sami ,
@Sami@lemmy.zip avatar

You portray aggressors as victims

Incredibly ironic that you frame militants who hide in tunnels because that’s the only way they can avoid being wiped out as a legitimate existential threat to the 19th most powerful military of the world.

They go to beach and have houses so everything is fine. Disgusting framing once again. I’m sure people of the Warsaw ghetto also had a couple of nice spots as well. They’ve both had movement limited and caloric intake rationed and access to clean water limited as well. If you don’t like the designation then bring it up with scholars of the subject who believe it to be the case.

I’m not saying the Israeli state does not exist. I’m saying it is the only state that exists at the moment. Killings having happened before the expulsion of ~70% of the population from their homes does not justify the perpetual subjugation of a people. Those that had emigrated to mandate Palestine owned a small fraction of land at the time of the expulsion as you know (and the percentage itself is irrelevant as that does not give them the right to claim more land through violence).

Hamas had virtually less than 2% support around 40 years after the nakba and it’s gained support consistently at junctions where Palestinians felt that they had no other means of achieving self-determination than through violence as a sovereign Palestine state was not intended to be allowed from the very start by the Zionist project as you can tell from the very first letters that frame them as the non-Jewish population as if they were a tiny minority. That is not to justify any killing of civilians or explain away the actions of Hamas. I hate islamists as much as you do (but I’m consistent with extending my hatred to judeo and christo facists as well). Hamas’ original charter was written by 5 people at a time when they did not have much popular support and was since revised in 2017 to remove mentions of being against jews and replace it with zionists instead (again not to say that they are “moderates” but for accuracy).

You talk about a miniscule GDP but why do you think that is the case? Why do you think they do not have the means of improving their conditions? Please don’t say water pipes into rockets because that’s also factually incorrect (they were pipes that were not in use). Israel has prevent action that would expand water access and has overdrawn from the aquifer that provides clean water to Gaza. The list of such actions goes on and on.

And lastly your wishes that the perpetrators are brought to justice are unfortunately pointless as long as occupation persists. I wish for occupation to end for the sake of Palestinians but also for the sake Israelis and hope you eventually reconsider your position.

Sami ,
@Sami@lemmy.zip avatar

Yes, breaches of said Oslo accords water agreements… I don’t know why I bother arguing with wikipedia links and gross misrepresentations of facts. I know that long after occupation ends you will claim to never have supported such atrocities.

You cannot claim it’s about safety and rule of law when it’s only for one ethnoreligious group at the expense of another’s ability of self-determination. If you believe that Jewish people are some magical chosen people who are above everyone else and especially above those savage, terroristic Muslims then that world view makes sense but then you’re a religious fundamentalist. There is no self-defense under occupation by definition as they are and continue to be the perpetual aggressor under international law.

Sami ,
@Sami@lemmy.zip avatar

What do you mean? The majority of palestinian are sunni muslim like the majority of arab countries and the vast majority of palestinian refugees outside of palestinian territory/israel are in the neighboring arab countries (albeit in horrible living conditions in refugee camps most of the time).

Sami ,
@Sami@lemmy.zip avatar

And if they are not let back in who will hold Israel accountable? Many of the people being bombed refuse to leave their homes for this very reason (as well as the south getting targeted by bombs/no shelter/no supplies either way so might as well keep whatever semblance of dignity they have left). They don’t trust Israel to allow them to return home due to historical precedent.

Sami ,
@Sami@lemmy.zip avatar

Tell that to the people that refuse to leave their house due to what I previously described. The last election in Gaza was in 2006. The average resident of Gaza was about 1 year old at the time. This conflict did not start yesterday. The Gazan population does not trust the international community to protect their right to return and they sure don’t trust the Israelis.

Sami ,
@Sami@lemmy.zip avatar

You can’t carpet bomb civilians then blame a country for not accepting 2 million refugees. Leveling the sector with air strikes is not a requirement.

Sami ,
@Sami@lemmy.zip avatar

Once again, the continuous bombing is a military choice by Israel. It’s because they don’t want to fight on the ground and value Palestinian civilian lives infinitely less than they value the lives of their own soldiers.

If that’s what you got from what I said then you’re deliberately being obtuse. Even if you evacuate 1.5 million civilians to Egypt what do you do with the 500k that stay? Are they alright to kill because they chose to remain in their homes?

I’ve left my home country due to the deteriorating situation from events indirectly caused by this conflict so I guess that’s my “agenda”. I am against the collective displacement AND collective punishment of Palestinians and the further destabilization of the region as a sick form of “revenge”.

Sami ,
@Sami@lemmy.zip avatar

Yes, civilians who want to leave should be able to. Does that change the reality of the situation? Does that make Egyptians willing to take in 2 million refugees because Israel is breaking international law? Does that save the lives of those who stay? Does that eradicate Hamas? Does that resolve the conflict equitably?

Spare me with your “agenda” accusations.

bombing the people who just targeted and murdered over a thousand civilians is legitimate or not

Bombing over 2000 children (so far) is not morally ambiguous. It’s never justified. There are other means. If you don’t believe that is the case then I urge you to reassess how you value the lives on each side of this conflict.

My current phone was second from Ebay and I got it for a pretty affordable price. If you have that option, I would recommend it as it reputable sellers there are more trustworthy than a local sale in my opinion and you can always dispute if something goes wrong.

Sami ,
@Sami@lemmy.zip avatar

So I guess since we’re not wearing masks anymore we should focus on decreasing the main source of CO2 in cities being cars and other modes of transport that run on fossil fuels and impact air quality and by extension cognitive ability. Would you agree?

Nicotine feels great. It’s why I still crave it after giving it up a while back. Everything else involved is horrible but there’s a reason people get hooked to begin with.

Sami ,
@Sami@lemmy.zip avatar

I could go until the late afternoon without eating with the power of nicotine. I would say it’s about the same as coffee but you can smoke more frequently than you can drink coffee (usually).

Looking for advice on buying a thinkpad

I am not especially tech-literate and very clumsy. I want to buy a thinkpad that I can set up as a privacy machine. I mostly use my computer for web browsing and messaging and don’t need something especially powerful, just something that can run bloated web pages easily and I won’t have to think about again for at least half...

Can’t go wrong with a used T series from Ebay that’s a couple years old. A quick search shows that you can get something like this for 320USD from a reputable seller:

Lenovo Thinkpad T14 Ryzen 5 Pro 4650U 2.10 GHz with Radeon Graphics 16GB 256GB

8GB is too little RAM these days otherwise I would also recommend the X13 model but those start at like 600USD for the 16GB models.

According to the study, photosynthesis in tropical trees begins to fail at about 46.7 degrees C (116 degrees F)

In a typical year, only around 0.01 percent of the leaves in the upper canopies surpass the temperature at which photosynthesis starts to fail. The global temperature increase that is associated with these changes is around 4 degree Celsius, which is currently in line with worst-case scenario projections.

They can just phrase it a little differently and argue semantics in front of a bunch of 70 year olds who don’t know what a browser is in a hearing or two. Maybe a couple campaign contributions through completely legal channels and that’s that. Anti trust enforcement has been falling in the US for decades.

That’s why we need to strive toward working less hours in general. Full time hours take up most of your waking hours when you factor in prep time, commute etc

What you do with your free time can make a world of difference of course but the math just doesn’t work out when you get home and have like 4 hours to do everything you need to do before you have to go to sleep.

Sami ,
@Sami@lemmy.zip avatar

I get the same as the main post. Either way the point still stands. I had someone correct me with a misconception about something because he googled it and thats what it said in the answer box. It’s getting increasingly difficult to rely on search results especially when google synthesizes them into questions and answers with little context

What’s a sensible political right space look like in your opinion? Because, in my view, self-identified conservatives on the internet tend to be the ones espousing hate and/or conspiracy theories while the more moderate ones don’t use the label or stick to centrist if anything. At the very least, there is an image problem with conservatism online.
