LadyAutumn , in Students banned from using nicknames under new anti-trans Florida schools guidance
@LadyAutumn@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

The amount of abject cruelty that is being leveled at trans children in Florida is fucking horrifying. This is legally enforced humiliation and bullying. This alone would have been more than enough to drive me to suicide when I was a child myself. And they are absolutely aware that this will cause that. Ron plans to orchestrate a genocide in Florida. He’s essentially forced every single person, company, doctor, politician, educator, teacher, any professional human being or group of human beings who values human life out of the state. When he’s done all that will remain are the most openly violent fascists and all the people who are too impoverished to leave the state. Of which many such impoverished disenfranchised people are trans children. How such open fascist power has not been internationally condemned and how he himself has not faced expulsion from any political office and faced serious legal actions from the government of the United States is beyond me. I thought world War 2 and the rise of fascism in Europe was supposed to have taught us something. Evidently not.

They don’t gotta burn the books, they just remove ‘em.

WWII might have been the end, but they’ve slowly been worsening education especially in places like Florida. I think at this point, capitalist social media is also a significant cause of the rise in fascism. When Zuck decides to platform holocaust deniers or twitter decides “free speech [for nazis]” it legitimizes it. It doesn’t take much before this translates into real life. You surround yourself online in your little bubble with all of the other crazies (yay Facebook is bringing people together) long enough and it’s nearly impossible not to translate that into the real world.

History is pretty fuckin’ easy to repeat if you don’t know the history.

Buffalox , (edited ) in Texas AG appeals judge’s order that allows women with complicated pregnancies to get abortions

It’s strange but true, USA has as high religiosity as Iran. A fundamentalist Islamic country.

We fought and won this fight on abortion here (Denmark) in the 70’s, it’s outright insane to see USA fight it and lose half a century later.

I never thought a democratic society could move backwards so badly. But then again USA is a very flawed democracy.

Perfide , (edited )

It’s not a coincidence. Iran was less religious in the early 70’s, too.

independent.co.uk/…/iran-shah-regime-1979-revolut…

There’s a reason so much media about the 60’s/70’s portrays hippies and that era of counterculture in general as lazy bums getting high instead of people tired of bullshit. It’s because it was fucking working, and the powers that be didn’t like that one bit and so put the full force of the propaganda machine behind making it into a mockery.

Buffalox ,

put the full force of the propaganda machine behind making it into a mockery.

Agreed, and Nixon making cannabis illegal was part of that, and probably a pretty crucial move, that gave the police enormous power to disrupt everything the “hippies” or protestors stood for.

Unfortunately I think it’s still working, the search for a more humane society based on humane values kind of ended with the 70’s.

PsychedSy ,

We didn’t fight and win. It was an awkward ruling to begin with otherwise it would have covered drugs and a whole lot of other health related issues. We counted a questionable ruling as a win, high fived and did nothing for 50 fucking years.

Roe vs wade was a bad court decision looking to be overturned. I wish congress has done something knowing it was bad. Countless scotus judges have said it was a bad decision. Even rgb said it was flawed

I’m a republican but I am pro-choice. Yet the party is pushing abortion bans without compromise.

I won’t vote democrat which means most likely I won’t vote. Until the republicans want to negotiate on abortion. They won’t get my vote.

I fully support the right to an abortion for any reason up until a reasonable time frame. I don’t know a single person who supports these crazy bans. I know they’re out there but they’re not in the circles I keep.

PsychedSy ,

I agree with you on timeframe, but we don’t really have data that shows a need to limit abortion really so it seems kind of moot. As it turns out, carrying a fetus for 9 months and then merking it at the last minute isn’t a thing women do, and certainly not intentionally.

wintermute_oregon , (edited )

The only reason I say we need a timeframe is compromise. Otherwise we end up with nothing.

I thought roe tried to balance it well.

This really is an issue with congress. They shouldn’t have sat around doing nothing all these years.

Buffalox ,

“Here” is Denmark. (I corrected my comment)

In Denmark we had a huge debate and lying campaigns by Christians against abortion, similar to what you have had in USA for 50 years now.

After a long struggle by women interest groups, and despite the misinformation by Christians, the Danish parliament finally decided to grant free abortion within 12 weeks of pregnancy in May 1973. So we have 50 year anniversary on the law this year.

In Denmark women won the fight against the extremely religious. But not just the victory of getting it legalized, the support in the population increased tremendously, and it was a huge prestigious loss for Christianity and their right to dictate morality based on religious views instead of reason based on current knowledge.

A poll in 2003 found that a whopping 93% of the population support it. Any talk by extreme Christians to remove it, has all but vanished. They know it’s a lost case for them. Now there is talk of relaxing the law, because in some cases it’s considered too strict.

wintermute_oregon ,

Here in America they try to frame it as a non-religious opposition to abortion.

For most people it’s all about religion.

It’s one reason I support the right to abortion. Your religion shouldn’t impact other people.

Buffalox ,

Here in America they try to frame it as a non-religious opposition to abortion.

But we know the anti abortion movement are Christians. Right?

Your religion shouldn’t impact other people.

Agree.

wintermute_oregon ,

How you cite?

As I said, they try to define it that way but for it’s tied to religion for most people.

I’m an atheist. I do attend mass but like Dawkins I just like the tradition and ceremony. I fully support abortion and even if I believed in God I’d support abortion.

I believe in the concept of a “soul”. Not in a paranormal way but there is more to us than just a chemical interaction but it goes away when we die. I do not think it’s formed until much later in life. As such, when we are in the womb, we are the potential for more but we are nothing special.

Now I don’t mind some crossover between religion and government. I like having Christmas off. I don’t really celebrate it but it’s a nice holiday.

What I don’t like is when we take purely religious concepts and try to ban others behavior because of your sky god. Abortion is an example since some religions allow it and some deny it.

Snap out of it and let’s all pitch in to save our children and world.

Bazzatron ,

Agreed, at least in principle - but your statement is so reductive it really could be said about anything.

It’s so hard to motivate people to vote, people are exhausted and finding ten minutes in the day to feel good about oneself, much less performing a (seemingly futile, thanks to those poisonous ideas you’ve mentioned) civic duty is bordering on impossible. When 1 in 15 people in the UK need drugs just to keep their desire to live one more day in check - and a good chunk of the remaining population from that statistic are barely holding on - fighting the futility for someone else is an insurmountable goal.

I don’t know if we can afford to wait for climate to get worse for people to take action. People are dying preventable deaths, if it weren’t for the very evident effects of man made climate change being politicised or obfuscated, maybe it’d be just a warm Summer in Europe right now.

How long can we wait for a peaceful solution to form?

If we don’t wait - how many heads would we need on pikes next to Mortimer Buckley or Larry Fink before we start seeing positive change? When would be the tipping point for the guillotine to become the most ethical solution?

Sorry, I’m rambling. I just feel so hopeless sometimes, and putting a X in a box 2 or 3 times a decade doesn’t do anything to make me feel like we’re making progress…!

wishthane ,

Voting is still good, but it’s the bare minimum. Not everyone has the time, but if you do, you should try to advocate publicly, and preferably in a group. Just like with unions, collective action is more effective. If I give feedback to my city individually, I’m a data point. But as part of an advocacy group, they reach out to us.

Grant_M ,
@Grant_M@lemmy.ca avatar

Absolutely! That’s what I mean. We have to do it ALL. Even the tiniest things have value. 👍

lamlamlam ,

Voting matters, but unfortunately it appears to be an incredibly sub-optimal solution for dealing with climate change for the following reasons:

  • Just because you can vote, doesn’t mean that the option you need is even on the menu. It often isn’t.
  • Through hard work you can get the option on the menu, but that doesn’t mean your politician won’t do “deals” after they are in power.
  • Lobbyists get access to politicians 24/7 and have a lot of influence, you have one vote every 4 years;
  • Even if politicians do what you want, it is unlikely that your country by itself will make a difference, this is a global problem.

Meanwhile we are all fucked. It is likely too late already for preventing severe climate change. Our only hope now is geoengineering. The USA and EU are already considering blocking the sun.

The people who (rightly) have a sense of urgency about this are taking more radical action. They are blocking roads and throwing soup at famous paintings. These are desperate acts that seem rational in the face of the horror that we should strive to avoid, but the majority opinion of our species seems to be that these people are “too radical” and that common folks just trying to get by should not be inconvenienced, and that these radical eco-terrorists should be thrown in a cage.

To be honest, I’m not sure that our species deserves to survive.

Mojojojo1993 ,

I do. Others don’t. Unfortunately it will end only one way. We all know how.

Real shame. Civilizations rose and fall. Ours was very fast

InternetTubes , (edited )

Frankly, the biggest blame lies with Russia. They saw climate change coming, right after coming out of COVID-19, and they said “Y’know what would be a good idea? To go full conquest mode given our short-term advantage in the oncoming crisis’ and force the rest of the world to have to cut back on their climate change pledges to defend against our imperialism.”

I mean, not that the climate pledges were doing much, but Russia went in the completely opposite direction and gave countries the perfect excuse to give them up. I’m definitely not claiming other countries have no blame, but even China and the US were at least posturing against climate change.

jerdle_lemmy ,

No, they’re not rational in the face of anything. They’re stupid virtue-signalling that does nothing to reduce climate change. The only way they could possibly be rational is that they get people talking about them, but climate change is not some little-known issue. The entire world has been screaming about it for the past 20 years. If you haven’t been listening, some cunt with soup isn’t going to change that.

lamlamlam , (edited )

“Virtue-signaling” is just another though-terminating cliché of the current culture wars. It implies that the action has no cost to the person and provides some social credit. These people are risking their lives, violence, prison time, etc. Everyone hates them. Nobody knows their names. They keep doing it. Your hypothesis doesn’t hold. If we all decided that we don’t give a shit about this civilization-ending event, might as well through some soup at a van Gogh painting. Why not? It won’t matter anyway.

Even if these people were horrible “virtue-signaling” vandals, it is a microscopic problem in comparison to the real one: clime change. And yet the media focus on the former. Why? You do the math.

SCB ,

NotMyOldRedditName ,

For what it’s worth, the first time anecdotally seems to be worse a lot of the time.

The vaccines produce very specific antibodies which do help, but when you get a real infection your body is able to make all sorts of other antibodies as it’s not only based off the very specific vaccine output.

So the 2nd time you get it, you now got the various vaccine antibodies / knowledge, and the more smorgasbord of antibodies and knowledge from the actual virus.

Not to say it still can’t be bad, but there’s a little hope that it might not be as bad.

socphoenix ,

I certainly hope that’s true if I do catch it again!
