expatriado , (edited ) in Mars is rotating more quickly, NASA mission finds | CNN

ummm, the opposite of earth, where the angular speed is decreasing

edit: earth’s deceleration is caused by tidal forces, mar’s could be by some diameter reduction, like an spinning dancer pulling their arms, maybe because the core is cooling or surface land/ice eroding/melting

dragontamer , in Zuck/Musk cage match canceled; tech billionaires blame each other

As far as I can tell, the order of events has been:

  1. Elon Musk Challenges Zuck to a fight
  2. Zuck says “MMA fight on August 26th??”. I already got UFC interested, we can do it for charity (said on August 6th)
  3. Elon Musk then says “Hurt myself lifting 45lb weights, I might need surgery”.
  4. Zuck says “I think you’re not serious”
  5. Elon Musk says “What about a practice session next week?”
  6. Zuck says “I still think you’re not serious. Please contact me when you’re serious”.
  7. Elon Musk says: “Lol you’re backing out of the fight. See you tomorrow (August 14th) in your backyard”.

Anyone else got a summary of events? Did I miss anything “important” ??? (And I fully recognize this is probably the dumbest news story I followed this whole year)

NathanielThomas , in Mark Zuckerberg shuts door on cage fight, saying Elon Musk ‘isn’t serious’

It’s just an all around weird, dumb idea.

First, as anemic and weak as Mark looks, he already trains. Elon doesn’t.

Zuckerberg is 39 years old, which isn’t young but is still within the age range of general fitness.

Elon Musk is 52 years old, a significant disadvantage against a younger and healthier opponent.

They also appear to be vastly different weight classes. Zuck is very skinny, while Musk looks unfit and overweight.

sadreality , in The Ukraine War might really break up the Russian Federation

Won't say it can't happen as it has happened twice in 20th century but let's not get all moist on all this hopium.

nova_ad_vitum ,

The main issue is that given the current power structure in Russia, Putin cannot have a real heir apparent. If there’s someone that everyone expects to take power after Putin, he has to get rid of them because they pose an intolerable threat. As a result, there is no such person. There are probably dozens of people who could take power after he’s gone, but it’s uncertain who will come out on top.

Amid all that chaos, whether one person will be able to exert power overall all of current Russian territory is also anyone’s guess. If the answer is no, then the current version of Russia will break apart.

Oh and there are tons of nukes in the mix here too .

MicroWave OP , in ‘Game-changer’: judge rules in favor of young activists in US climate trial
@MicroWave@lemmy.world avatar

On Monday, Judge Kathy Seeley said that by prohibiting government agencies from considering climate impacts when deciding whether or not to permit energy projects, Montana is contributing to the climate crisis and stopping the state from addressing that crisis. The 103-page order came several weeks after the closely watched trial came to a close on 20 June.

Among the policies the challengers targeted: a provision in the Montana Environmental Policy Act (MEPA) barring the state from considering how its energy economy climate change impacts. This year, state lawmakers amended the provision to specifically ban the state from considering greenhouse gas emissions in environmental reviews for new energy projects.

That provision is unconstitutional, Seeley ruled.

MicroWave OP , in Georgia court posts then removes document detailing charges against Trump
@MicroWave@lemmy.world avatar

The Fulton County document, first reported by Reuters, includes Trump’s name and lists the case status as “open.” It’s dated Aug. 14, and timed-stamped 12:39 p.m. The document lists 12 felony counts and one serious felony count for violating Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations, or RICO, Act. According to Reuters, charges have not been filed against Trump.

MicroWave OP , in (Wisconsin) Supreme Court Justice Rebecca Bradley has been quietly editing her own Wikipedia page
@MicroWave@lemmy.world avatar

Liberal media has distorted my record since the beginning of my judicial career, and I refuse to let false accusations go unchecked,” Bradley told the Journal Sentinel in an email. “On my wikipedia page, I added excerpts from actual opinions and removed dishonest information about my background.”

What, then, was getting under her skin?

It’s clear Bradley really, really disliked the section in her Wikipedia page dealing with a Republican challenge to the stay-at-home order issued by the administration of Democratic Gov. Tony Evers in response the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to her Wikipedia page, in May 2020, Bradley “compared the state’s stay-at-home orders to the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II,” a case known as Korematsu v. the United States.

    We’re just using racial slurs now? Come on, that’s over the line.

    ratman150 ,

    I don’t think that’s a racial slur my guy, a dictionary indicates it’s slang for female genitalia.

    techt ,

    I believe they’re referring to the use of Uncle Thomas, which while perhaps semantically appropriate is definitely a racially charged moniker.

    DragonTypeWyvern ,

    There’s a pretty big difference from a racial slur and a racial moniker that is only acceptable for people of that race to use as an accusation of betraying the community.

    I can't comment on the use of "Uncle Tom" specifically.

    But we ought not to use insults like that ever. By using them on people who "deserve it", we are basically saying these terrible things are true, but we usually don't say them because it's rude. A better way to think is that we don't use discriminatory insults/slurs because the hatred they represent is completely without merit.

    JustZ ,
    @JustZ@lemmy.world avatar

    It’s an inaccurate epithet anyhow. Uncle Tom was overly nice to whites so as not to draw their wrath.

    In the end, the whites beat Uncle Tom to death when he refused to give the whereabouts of two runaway slaves.

    I don’t know what epithet you’d call someone who turned in the two slaves and lived to work the big house another day, but that’s what you should call Clarence.

    I used to call Clarence an Uncle Tom, but then I read the book.

    Fair points on all counts.

    DragonTypeWyvern , (edited )

    As someone who also read the book and was shocked that Tom wasn’t the minstrel show Tom that really earned the name: this weird effort to take back his name is self defeating and artificial.

    It says quite a lot that people also try to say “Maybe we should call them Uncle Ruckuses instead!”

    Mainly, it says they’re not clued in enough to realize the show/comic had two Uncle Toms. One had Uncle in his name, the other Tom.

    MacGruder wasn’t being very subtle, and yet everyone seems to have missed it anyways.

    Hell, if nothing else this whole weird idea is erasure of the minstrel shows. If you want to raise some actual awareness then feel free to separate Book Tom from Minstrel Tom, because we need to remember both.

    "It's so unfair that my own words can be written down for posterity!"

    Tell me she doesn't know that just because you've edited a Wikipedia page, that the previous version still exists, and is likely to draw attention and discussion because of your edits.

    Silverseren ,

    And is super easy to revert to the prior version too. It's basically two clicks to make it happen. And then have an admin protect the page to only allow established editors so randos can't do this with just an IP address again.

    Nougat ,

    Just in case she happened to read my comment, I didn't want to use the word "revert" in order to avoid confusion.

    JDubbleu ,

    I love too that she mentioned, “REAL OPINIONS” as if those are more valid than the exact words she said.

    antizero99 , (edited )

    It said “Actual Opinion” not “Real Opinions”.

    I’m pretty sure opinion doesn’t mean what you think it does. When a judge writes up an opinion it’s a bit stronger than me saying what I do or don’t like or how I feel about something. Same as the difference between scientific theory and the other definition.

    grue ,

    Her judicial opinions are the exact words she wrote, though.
