Ragnell , in Hawaii fires: 'Tourists swim in the waters we died in'
@Ragnell@kbin.social avatar

So one thing you have to remember about Hawaii is that Hawaii didn't CHOOSE to become part of the US. The US seized the place and forced the Queen to sign some paperwork turning the country over to them. And now a bunch of people from the country that took over your country come every year to party it up, even if there's been a disaster that killed a bunch of native Hawaiians.

This is why a lot of native Hawaiians have a big problem with tourists not just now, but ALL of the time. And if you say their economy is getting uplifted by tourism you will get an EARFUL about how foreign companies are what's actually reaping the rewards of that tourism, and that the land on the island is too expensive for natives to buy BECAUSE of the tourist industry snapping it up and how they'd basically rather be poor than occupied by a party industry that encourages outsiders to come down, treat people like servants and trash the place.

Now I can't do anything to solve this and neither can any of you. Just give them a break, guys. It's not easy to live in another man's paradise.

Dude it’s so sad… I am going to rant a little cause I am outraged with CBS! THEY KEEP SHOWING AND INTERVIEWING OPRAH!! Asking her how she feels and how this hurt her…Who the fuck cares about how Oprah feels about her mega million dollar house that was basically untouched while the community is hurting and many died!!! Oprah wasn’t even there, she flew in!! They keep interviewing Oprah and asking how she feels… Gail King on CBS tried to Martyr Oprah by saying Oprah went to buy some cots… How about opening that mega million dollar house for the community? How much money is she worth these days,? Why can’t she foot some of the bill for her community and actually step up if she feels so connected to the Island that she lives at 10% of the years for…

Like I said- I hope you’re a white, heterosexual male. Being homeless and alive sounds better to me than being killed inside your home because your neighbors don’t like your color or who you love.

All I am trying to say is that it is definitely appealing that I can afford a roof over my head there lol. You have got to be shitting me if you think on the street in Canada is better

You sound like someone who has all their human needs covered and ran out of things to complain about

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

It may very well be better if you’re queer, yes. You’re protected by a human rights charter for being queer in Canada. In Idaho… well, read the article.

FlyingSquid ,

Here you will likely freeze to death

Would live in a red state if push come to shove, just hole up in your house and work from home, live a solitary life

Idaho also has incredible nature you can escape to

Seriously if anyone in Idaho here wants to come try living in BC I’ll trade because it’s getting really hard to survive here

It snows in the summer in Idaho.

I make six figures but thx for the kind words

Nah it’s Canada. Regular working people are ending up on the street in droves here due to housing and grocery prices.

Our government cares more about easy talking points like the dude I’m debating with than actual human needs. But hey at least we can be openly gay while we freeze to death on the street lol

FReddit ,

Well, definitely don’t come to Florida, then. We’re having that issue, too. The heat index has been 110F+ for the last two weeks and I still see even more panhandlers than in recent years.

I used to call Florida a toilet because it was fun to shit on, but I think it’s just a hellhole now. Vanishingly few benefits to living here, unless you have a lot of money.

Chatotorix ,

My family has checked the validity of nazifascism, thank you very much. I repeat: never an alternative.

Dashi , in Revealed: neo-Nazi active club counts several of US military as members | California

OK, so the “Current” member of the armed forces is only current because in the military you need to be active duty in order to be in detention.

I’m a little confused as to the wording here. Typically detention is in the brig and if they are in the brig regardless of what rank they went in as they are busted down to private.

I understand artistic liberty but it seems they are intentionally stretching this. And i while heartedly understand that there could be some active duty Marines that are neo nazi’s. The examples given are a stretch to me.

breadsmasher ,
@breadsmasher@lemmy.world avatar

what makes it a stretch?

Is a private not a serving member of the military?

Cianalas ,

I think he means that they’re only ‘active’ because they’re in detention, but they’re not ‘active’ in the sense that we normally think of it as in actively serving in a role.

Sort of like saying that residents of a town are gang affiliated when they’re only there because that’s where the prison is located.

AttackBunny ,
@AttackBunny@kbin.social avatar

It says further down in the article that he was busted down to private and is in the brig for 11 months. I suspect that most people don’t understand how the military ranking systems work anyhow, so it really means very little to most people, until you throw around words like general or commandant.

$709 isn’t even exaggerating.

My rent alone increased by that much in the past two years.

Add to the $150-$300 more for groceries.

Every restaurant visit averages about $30 per person. Fucking McDonald’s is like $10 for a meal.

I no longer do UberEats or take an Uber, because they doubled in fees.

Jaded , in Record Labels File $412 Million Copyright Infringement Lawsuit Against Internet Archive

It’s kind of crazy to see it all on there for individual download. It should only be available in bulk imo, to act more as an archive and not a pirate site.

lolcatnip ,

Why would one not be able to get individual items from an archive? It’s there for people to access the stuff, not just for people setting up other archives.

Jaded ,

To avoid being sued? The internet archive shouldn’t be acting like a new age limewire. I hate record companies as much as the next guy but I use torrents and youtube-dl. No need for the internet archive to be offering the service at such risk.

They hold a lot of important stuff, I just don’t want open season to be declared on suing them. Pick your battles kind of moment.

lolcatnip ,

They shouldn’t have to do that. Owners of IP they don’t publish it should lose their IP within a year.
