goforliftoff , in Massachusetts passed a 4% millionaire's tax last year. Now every public school student is going to get free lunch

Cool, but you know who isn’t getting a free lunch now? Those millionaires who worked so hard for that money. What have those kids done to earn theirs?

/s, to be clear. I wish these cool places to live (e.g, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Michigan) weren’t so fucking cold. Why can’t there be a nice liberal southern state?

zdrvr ,

There is. It is California and a 500sqft house cost $1000000000

steltek ,

Uhh, the cold isn’t the problem. It’s too expensive to live here and the real fix for housing (forced upzoning by the State) is a political nonstarter.

But I will gladly shovel snow versus face the heat, humidiity, snakes, bears, tornadoes, severe hurricanes, drought, wild fires, car oriented development, and whatever other nightmares the rest of the country has to offer. Just get a good coat, LL Bean boots, and a snowblower. It’s not that bad.

masterairmagic , in Mark Zuckerberg shuts door on cage fight, saying Elon Musk ‘isn’t serious’

We’re living in a bizarro world where Zuck is cool thanks to Elon.

garlic ,

Nothing about this makes Zuckerberg cool…

alex ,

“cool”… let’s not take it too far. let’s keep it at “slightly less awful than musk”

lolcatnip ,

Greedy business robot vs Nazi attention whore.

Smoogy ,

Please don’t romanticize unnecessary violence. And all just because two irrational idiots failed at communication with egos the size of the sun. This is how toxic masculinity is made.

FlyingSquid ,

What makes you think Musk getting his ass kicked isn’t necessary?

Puzzle_Sluts_4Ever ,

Eh. On the musk side, definitely. He saw someone he didn’t like and started mocking him and challenging him to fights because musk “is bigger”

Zuck is a robot so shitty that even Simone Giertz couldn’t get a video out of it and he is tied to… a decent number of stolen elections and coups and ethnic cleansings. But, when he isn’t manipulating the world or making a shitty version of VR Chat, he is an amateur martial artist and has friendly “mma matches” on the weekends. This would be like asking your buddy who rents track time every few months if you can race them.

And throughout the entire thing: musk has been a loud jackass who constantly tries to weasel out (and there is no Delaware court to make him follow through this time). Whereas zuck basically said “Cool, I’ll fight you. How about this time and this place?” before shifting to “You are wasting my time and everyone else’s time. Call me if you ever grow up”

Like, Zuck is a monster. He is basically everything musk wishes he could be. But he has actually handled this in an incredibly mature and “adult” way.

Coreidan ,

You are the only one that thinks he’s cool.

RomeCallen ,

YaaAsantewaa , (edited ) in 'Barbie' on track to become highest grossing domestic film of the year

Because it stars white people. Has nothing to do with these garbage movies being good

Shalakushka ,
@Shalakushka@kbin.social avatar

So literally any movie, so long as it stars white people, will become the highest grossing domestic film?

JuzoInui , in Mark Zuckerberg shuts door on cage fight, saying Elon Musk ‘isn’t serious’

I’d despise them both. But I’m willing to watch the Zuck rip off Elmo’s leg and beat him to death with it.

Kage520 , in Massachusetts passed a 4% millionaire's tax last year. Now every public school student is going to get free lunch

We need different terms for people who HAVE a million dollars and people who MAKE a million per year. Lots of people will read this millionaire’s tax and think it will apply to them when they are nearing retirement since they finally have a million dollars after saving all their life.

abraxas ,

That’s what the campaign to quash the bill did. That, and tried to convince people that they might have a single multi-million-dollar transaction in their life (like selling a large successful business) and have to pay an extra 4% on it.

Always a push to get the “temporarily embarassed millionaire” to support the reach. “Yeah, yanno. My little lawmowing operation that makes me $20,000 coild sell for over a million and then I’m fucked”

Hoomod ,

Ah, the Philip J. Fry mentality

“someday I might be rich, and then people like me better watch their step”

Buelldozer ,
@Buelldozer@lemmy.today avatar

We need different terms for people who HAVE a million dollars and people who MAKE a million per year.

We have them. The first is referred to as “Wealth” or “Worth” and the other is referred to as “Income”. Therefore what Mass instituted is called an Income Tax.

Hazdaz , in Mark Zuckerberg shuts door on cage fight, saying Elon Musk ‘isn’t serious’

This isn’t even the last word in this nonsense.

The latest is that Musk, who clearly never knows when to shut the fuck up, called Zuck a coward when Zuck essentially offered Musk an “out” by saying to move on.

Hate both these fucks, but Zuck would destroy Elon. Time and again Zuck is giving Elon a way out of this and time and again Elon finds a way to look like an even bigger loser.

Getting beat by Zuck is going to push Elon past “deluded rich douchebag” to full-on Bond villain, I fear.

lickmysword ,

Good thing no country would proliferate such a personality.

Right? Right!? /s

When Musk gets kicked out of art school, we’d better be ready

TheCopiedCovenant , (edited )

I’m gonna be honest, I have a small level of respect for Zuck. As long as I ignore the fact that Facebook has pioneered destroying online privacy that is …

Despite being one of the richest men on the planet, and running one of the largest tech companies on the planet, he has actually been a good father/husband from what I understand. Also, he knows when to shut the fuck up and let his PR people tell him what to say.

Musk is insufferable. Arrogant, know-it-all, blabbering asshole. Reading through his Twitter is cringe, just in the last week he’s retweeted like 5+ COVID conspiracy or “anti-woke” things.

Hazdaz ,

I don’t follow Zuck in the slightest bit but if he just shuts the fuck up and simply enjoy his billions of dollars that still makes him better than Elon. The single worst thing about Musk is that he came onto the scene acting like he was a friend of the Left and environmentalists and stuff like that, when he clearly was just using them.

fmstrat , in Police face criticism over central Kansas newspaper raid in which computers, phones seized

Meyer said he has been flooded with offers of help from press freedom groups and other news organizations. But he said what he and his staff need is more hours in the day to get their next edition put together.

Both he and Newell are contemplating lawsuits — Newell against the newspaper and Meyer against the public officials who staged the raid.

What happened is terrible, and he and the staff must be in so much pain right now, but this is Meyer’s opportunity to step up and tackle the bigger issue vs focus on what’s happening to him.

A small local paper can miss an issue if it means making a national point about the abuses that allow small-town overreach to occur. If they’ve never missed an issue before, that even becomes a positive in court. If he doesn’t accept the help, and doesn’t file lawsuits, this will be a distant memory.

It will be like he’s in an abusive relationship with the local government. “That’s just how they are, but I’m getting to do my thing now, so oh well,” and the abuses there, and everywhere, continue. I truly hope that’s not the case.

MagicShel , in Record Labels File $412 Million Copyright Infringement Lawsuit Against Internet Archive

“In reality, Defendants are nothing more than mass infringers.”

Nothing more? Really? I mean it sounds like they are on shaky ground with this project, but that statement seems awfully reductive. It’s okay; they are allowed to be important and good and also be wrong (if they are, I’m not a lawyer).

FunderPants ,

Given the age of the music they cite this whole thing reminds me how ridiculously long copyright terms are.

neshura ,

Imo modern copyright and trademarks will be our downfall. Can’t get shit done because big companies can just lock shit behind a closet for almost over a lifetime.

mephiska , in US inflation means families are spending $709 more per month than two years ago

What a terribly written article. It makes it sound like all Americans suddenly have mortgages at the current 7% when reality is most are sitting with current loans in the 3% range and much lower payments. This headline assumes everyone is paying the current rates.

Vent ,

Most Americans pay rent, not mortgage. Rent changes every year/when the lease renews.

Shame to see it under attack as of late.
