Chickenstalker , in A feud is heating up between Arizona workers and the world's leading chipmaker after the company claimed the US doesn't have the skills to build its new factory

Linus O’Tech Tips said TMC wanted to bring over Taiwanese work culture, i.e., wageslave 24/7 until you die for low pay but Americans balk at such demands. That’s what is meant by shortage of “skilled” workers.

scmstr , in Texas Revamps Houston Schools, Closing Libraries and Angering Parents

Well, that’s embarrassing…

DontTreadOnBigfoot , in US returns huge haul of stolen artefacts to Italy

CoolSouthpaw , in Hawaii has a robust emergency siren warning system. It sat silent during the deadly wildfires | CNN

Well, it ain’t “robust” if it didn’t sound. Shitty headline, really.

TheQuietCroc , in San Francisco's North Beach streets clogged as long line of Cruise robotaxis come to a standstill

These things are in Austin too and they cause smaller versions of issues like this all the time. We have a lot of major events throughout the year and I’m not looking forward to these things interfering with traffic more than they already do.

APassenger ,

We were in SF over the weekend and happened upon one of those in the Presidio. It was so incredibly timid about turning… there’s no way their current abilities don’t lead to issues.

Yes, someone losing patience and doing something may be on that person, but we’re talking super tentative, slow and uncaring about the impact on nearby vehicles.

TheQuietCroc ,

I know all about this. I drive for Uber on the weekends and I just overtake these things cuz they completely stop in the middle of the road to change lanes and I ain’t got time for that.

Hazdaz , in Argentine far-right outsider Javier Milei posts shock win in primary election

I hear “shocking far right election win” for any country these days, and I immediately think Putin has something to do with it.

phoneymouse , (edited ) in U.S. unveils plans for large facilities to capture carbon directly from air

Cool idea but I wonder if in 100 years time, we have the opposite problem where corporations have built businesses around co2 removal and then they take too much.

Edit: not sure why people are downvoting. Climate change an example of unintended consequences. Curious what future unintended consequences we might encounter with this approach. Not saying we shouldn’t try it, but let’s try to think ahead a bit more than we did last century.

newthrowaway20 ,

Doubt it. The major problem with these projects is they inadequately address the volume of carbon needed to make a meaningful impact, and then you have to come up with ways to store the carbon, which is equally problematic.

This to me is a way to allow businesses to continue polluting at increasingly higher numbers because now we will ‘supposedly’ have technology that will just captures it so they can keep on being dirty, or possibly feel ok with being even dirtier than they used to be.

Hazdaz , in Longterm use of Proton Pump Inhibiters linked to dementia

Getting old is just so awful. If you don’t get dementia, then you might get cancer based on what someone else posted about what untreated acid reflux can do.

BilboBargains ,

Not much of a choice. The way we approach end of life is not discussed enough. It feels like there has to be something better than a gradual slide into decrepitude or jumping off a bridge.

fne8w2ah , in Massachusetts passed a 4% millionaire's tax last year. Now every public school student is going to get free lunch

Common sense rules in these blue areas.

Treczoks , in A feud is heating up between Arizona workers and the world's leading chipmaker after the company claimed the US doesn't have the skills to build its new factory

It is just the usual shortage of skilled exploitable workers. Nothing new.

Pussydogger , in Massachusetts passed a 4% millionaire's tax last year. Now every public school student is going to get free lunch

The food still looks pretty garbage compare to Japan!

Burn_The_Right , (edited ) in Trump heading for Republican 'coronation' as 2024 rivals struggle to stop him

It makes sense, really. He is the most popular candidate amongst conservatives because he most accurately reflects their personalities. He is the perfect representative of conservatism. Vile, grotesque and pure evil.

Nowhere does it mention owning a house with a garden. Even if you could own or co-own a flat or a terraced house you wouldn’t have a landlord leeching from you every month.

… Besides, not all 8 billion people live in America

Nerdulous , in South Carolina state Sen. John Scott, longtime Democratic lawmaker, dies at 69

None of our representatives should be dying in office. At least he didn’t drag this out like McConnell and Feinstein. May he rest in peace regardless.

jordanlund , in A feud is heating up between Arizona workers and the world's leading chipmaker after the company claimed the US doesn't have the skills to build its new factory

The US easily has the skills to build a factory like this… OPERATING IT once it’s built? That’s a different deal…

    Coreidan ,

    ?

    jordanlund ,

There aren’t enough Americans qualified to work in a new chip manufacturing plant.

    DaTingGoBrrr ,

But it’s not built and the workers they want to bring to USA is to finish building the factory

    jordanlund ,

As others have said, we have plenty of workers here who can and will do the job, the issue is they don’t want to hire union employees who will do the work to current building codes. :)

“We are now entering a critical phase of handling and installing the most advanced and dedicated equipment,” said TSMC chairman Mark Liu. “However, we are encountering certain challenges as there is an insufficient amount of skilled workers with those specialized expertise required for equipment installation in a semiconductor-grade facility.”

    jordanlund ,

Funny how Intel isn’t running into that with their big investments in Arizona and New Mexico, but it looks like they are hitting a more generalized worker shortage with their $20B plant in Ohio.

Maybe that’s the problem, Intel is snapping them all up? ¯\(ツ)/¯ They’re definitely here. We have a couple big campuses in our back yard…
