masterofn001 , in US air force avoids PFAS water cleanup, citing supreme court’s Chevron ruling

If only there was someone. A commander of sorts. A chief type person, who could order them to do so.

If only there was such a position.

DeltaSMC ,

That’s what it says in the article.

“Moreover, one arm of the administration cannot sue another, so the military cannot sue the EPA, and the case would never end up in court where the Chevron decision would come into play, said Walter Mugdan, a former EPA Superfund director. Instead, it would be resolved internally by a presidential administration instead of the judiciary.”

Frozyre , (edited ) in Locking up items to deter shoplifting is pushing shoppers online

Edit: Oh, do the thieves not like the comment? Too bad. Stop stealing. No, you're not fucking 'The Man', you're fucking all over the hard-working and overworked retail workers and their stores. So fuck you.

Yup, incoming more salty responses from illogical dipshits with their mental gymnastics.

Here's an idea - stop planting your stores in places where crime is prominent. Threaten towns that if they don't clean their crime act, they won't get a store that'll be convenient for people living there.

Pulling back on self-checkout too? Self-Checkout can actually still be of use, if it was more modernized and monitored. Also, if people adequately did their jobs too.

Other than theft, people are online shopping for other reasons. Maybe they don't want to spend too much on gas going to a location an hour or longer away, find out that the shit they want isn't available so they've gotta now go around town just picking store after store until they get even a quarter of what they want.

Maybe people don't want to put up with all of the shitstains that manage to collect enough braincells to get up and go out, with their wailing stupid kids and their need to obstruct anyway they can while they motion around like fucking zombies.

TheTechnician27 ,
@TheTechnician27@lemmy.world avatar

they won’t get a store that’ll be convenient for people living there

They won’t have a big box store come in, starve out all of the small businesses, and force their town into indentured servitude where everyone has to work there, they’re not paid a living wage, and they can only afford to shop at the big box store, further increasing the problem in a vicious cycle?

The horror, I tell you.

Frozyre ,

Lemme tell you the amount of plaza chains and stuff that are built around and near big-box stores. Do you just live in a town where it's just one big box store? Please...

The ignorance of your comment.

lolcatnip ,

Your ignorance is showing. A hell of a lot of people do live in towns where the only options are a big box store, or equally shitty dollar stores.

the_toast_is_gone ,

How often do more ethical businesses swoop in to rent out the spaces formerly occupied by indentured servitude corporations? If these businesses aren’t replaced by something, what will the people formerly working there do for an income?

tobogganablaze ,

Dude, I live in Indiana. We’re not exactly a crime hub. You can go into Walmarts in towns with a population of 1200 and two cops because it’s all they need and you will still find shit like shaving products and cosmetics hidden behind glass.

SeaJ ,

Dude, I live in Indiana. We’re not exactly a crime hub.

*excluding Indianapolis

Although, to be honest, the areas that I visited seemed perfectly fine.

Sure, there are some actual high crime parts of the state, but I’m thinking towns like Spencer (Pop 2,466).

I think whatever responses you don’t like are more in reaction to your tone.

JimmyBigSausage , in How X owner Elon Musk uses his 'free speech' platform to amplify his views worldwide

Will we ever quit talking about this dipshit?

Not so long as media gets clicks from mentioning him. Same as Trump. Anger sells and most major media being owned by rightwing they also want to make their views mainstream.

NOT_RICK , in SpaceX accused of dumping mercury into Texas waters for years
@NOT_RICK@lemmy.world avatar

What would they even be using mercury for?

acetanilide ,

Elon’s daily dose. It takes a lot to get on his level.

Just kidding, but it seems like something to do with the fuel/exhaust.

I’ve read multiple articles and the most I’ve gotten is that their first launch didn’t have the cleaner fuel that future launches did. I am not sure how that would cause repeated incidents… perhaps it’s from metal parts in the rockets? 🤔 I could have missed something as I was reading but hopefully someone else will know the answer.

Peppycito ,

If that kind of shit gets released on the ground, what gets released into the upper atmosphere?

Atrichum ,

CO2 and water. The rocket fuel is not the source of the mercury.

Peppycito ,

The pumps need to be running full bore before ignition and keep running after cut off. Watch a video of shut off and tell me where they’re keeping all that CO^2 and water on the rocket.

SkaveRat ,

What?

Peppycito ,

At shut off and start up the rocket pumps methane and oxygen into the atmosphere before ignition. The Falcon 9 pumps kerosene and oxygen. Watch the live streams and look at the engines at meco.

Atrichum ,

Cleaner fuel? It’s oxygen and methane. Carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, no mercury. Still I can’t think of a source.

acetanilide ,

The article I read said they didn’t use that until after the first launch. I did not look into it further.

threelonmusketeers ,

I couldn’t think of a source either. Upon closer inspection, it seems possible that this entire story is based on two typos in the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality report.

cannibalkitteh ,

Dumping into the water. It is an overall expense, and not related to the business interests. They just needed some evil villain stuff going on because Elon really wants to meet Captain Planet.

MegaUltraChicken ,

Elon probably picked up old timey hat making during one of his ketamine binges or something.

NegativeInf ,

That would mean that Elon has any amount of skill.

I very much doubt it.

Fester ,

Oh it just means he acquired a servant that has 30+ years experience in old timey hat making. But he’s rich, so we speak as if it’s him that’s doing it.

FlyingSquid ,

TransplantedSconie ,
Lucidlethargy ,

The heart ring kid would make Elon’s chest implode if he pointed that ring at him.

casmael ,

Slippery consistency helps the highest bidder to slide up Elon’s bumhole more easily and efficiently. What you really want in this situation is a low energy threshold for financial turnover - in this case the point at which dollar bills are more than 50% up musks arse. Mercury gets that done, and Elon likes the taste, but unfortunately on this occasion it got into the water supply which is sad to see.

treadful ,

threelonmusketeers ,

Texas government probably requires you poison people to operate in the State.

casmael ,

Naturally. If people forget to turn off the poison sockets before bed, that’s their own problem!

threelonmusketeers ,

This confused me as well. Upon closer inspection, it seems possible that this entire story is based on two typos in the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality report.

How come only those two companies build those medical devices?

    Not much demand, I’d imagine.

How come Scientology can fuck with them like that?

They have a lot of money, and that’s all it takes.

Why do we still have religion and cults in positions of power?

Because the people who put them in power fall for their bullshit, same as it ever was.

yesman , in Scientology is on the brink of killing an entire medical industry

The whole field of psychology has such an inhumane and crackpot history that they’ve brought this upon themselves. I’m don’t defend Scientology, but they don’t stick ice-picks in peoples brains or use the courts to sterilize minorities. I’m not aware of a Scientologist being instrumental in the Satanic Panic or retrieving false memories, through hypnosis, that put innocent people in jail for child abuse.

EST isn’t going away because Scientology attacked it, it’s because psychologists have cried wolf too many times that their barbaric methods have therapeutic value.

    lolcatnip ,

The whole field of psychology has such an inhumane and crackpot history that they’ve brought this upon themselves.

Are people practicing psychiatry today responsible for the mistakes of people in the past who had similar goals but entirely different methods? Do you think prescribing medical treatments for mental disorders should automatically mean taking the blame for past mistakes?

Num10ck , in Newsom threatens to take money from counties that don't reduce homelessness

maybe California shouldn’t have a 3-5 YEAR waitlist for section 8/Housing Choice Vouchers housing?

maybe they should force all those empty retail/commercial/industrial/residential properties to be put to use or forced to hand over to the state.

maybe the church of scientology shouldnt be allowed to own thousands of buildings in california with no stated purposed or published staff?

    Landless2029 , (edited )

Maybe they should also start building more apartments at rent controlled rates?

Its not just about the empty spots. Those are owned.

Its about the rich people denying apartments to maintain the clean skyline.

    Edit: added also

    FrowingFostek ,

Nah, I’m with Num10ck. There are more than enough houses with existing infrastructure to utilities. Putting up more homes is wasteful and adds carbon into the air.

The state has the power to levy a heavy vacancy tax on unoccupied spaces. I think thats the best route to getting people housed.

    Landless2029 ,

Oh I also agree we need to tax unoccupied housing. On a sliding scale too since there are land barons rampant in our nation.

This would force real estate companies to fill homes that costs them loads to keep empty. Instantly increasing supply and thus cost of rent goes down.

    FrowingFostek ,

Oh OK I must have misunderstood you. I’m all about rent stabilizing and taxing the rich.

    Carry on.

    Landless2029 ,

I wasn’t clear. Edited an also for clarification.

    HelixDab2 ,

Rent control disincentivizes building new apartments though. That is, if I take out a load of debt to build a $10M apartment, and due to rent control my profit is going to be capped at levels that are probably below what I could get through low-risk treasury bills, why would I build anything? Sure, you can get it built by the state, but states have a distressing tendency to stop adequately funding required infrastructure and not do necessary maintenance in a timely fashion (more so than most shitty apartment complexes even).

I entirely agree that NIMBYs need to be steamrolled though. High-density housing is far, far better than sprawl.

    Maeve ,

maybe California shouldn't have a 3-5 YEAR waitlist for section 8/Housing Choice Vouchers housing?

I live in a deep red state and it's that wait, or more, here, and I believe it's a lottery system, at that.

    SkyezOpen ,

My wet dream is dead malls converted to indoor cities. Turn old shops into efficiency apartments, the huge end cap stores like Boscovs into grocery stores, food court into cafeteria-style dining. Hell, even keep some food places or shops if you want to get some capitalists hard. Just charge them rent out the ass in exchange for a nearly captive consumer base and use the funds to improve the place.
